We heard over the weekend that Felix Hernandez could return from his oblique injury as soon as Wednesday against the Tigers, but it turns out he’ll have to wait a little bit longer.

According to Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times, Hernandez will return no earlier than Saturday against the Angels. King Felix made it through a bullpen session today without any issues, but Mariners pitching coach Carl Willis wants to see him throw another one before returning to game action.

“As far as going out and competing, one more bullpen is going to allow him to just tighten things up a little bit,” Willis said. ”But on the physical side, he didn’t have any issues.”

Hernandez hasn’t pitched since September 2 due to pain in his left side. The AL Cy Young Award hopeful has a 3.01 ERA and 200/41 K/BB ratio over 194 1/3 innings this season. The best-case scenario at this point is that he makes two more starts.

They should just shut him down for the rest of the year and come back strong next season.
