Bobby Valentine’s 9/11 comments may have cost him a gig with TBS

Sep 27, 2013, 4:47 PM EDT

Bobby Valentine horizontal

Yesterday TBS announced its postseason crew. Keith Olbermann will man the studio and with him will be Pedro Martinez and Tom Verducci. On merit alone that’s a solid studio team, assuming of course Pedro is as candid in his studio analysis as he is in interviews and public appearances.

But it may have been more than merit alone which led to that particular composition. Another guy is rumored to have been in the mix: Bobby Valentine. And Neil best of Newsday reports that the reason he was ultimately passed over was his recent jive about how the Yankees weren’t around in the community after 9/11 like the Mets were.

We talked about those at length a couple of weeks ago. The comments were both counterfactual and bizarre and spoke to a person with a pretty skewed and likely self-centered view of events. Neither of which are qualities that go well with a TV baseball analyst. So, whether it was 9/11 or what kind of mustache wax one should use, it makes a lot of sense that TBS went in another direction.

Well, if I was looking for the upshot of the Yankees missing the playoffs I just found it – not having to listen to that crew makes this entire fiasco of a season worth it.

Bobby V. Once an asshole, always an asshole. I’ve dealt with him twice. He’s a complete jackass when he has no reason to be.

Well, we all know Olbermann isn’t self-centered … right?

    • gloccamorra - Sep 27, 2013 at 8:11 PM

Olbermann has been chastened. Chastened! Being a laughingstock in multiple venues will do that. I can’t say the same about Bobby.

He actually seems like a changed man…for the time being.

His ESPN2 talk show is excellent so far.

I found him the least likable character in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.

Oh, TBS is only worried about Bobby V’s insensitivity? That’s good, because Olbermann isn’t a squawking, shrill looney in his own right. Don’t know how that clown keeps getting these jobs. Just go back to obscurity, under the rock in Maddow’s back yard.

    • fearlessleader - Sep 27, 2013 at 6:55 PM

For whatever it’s worth, I’m a flaming leftist liberal, and I think Olbermann’s a smug, pompous, all-around insufferable windbag.

I would, however, be perfectly fine with Rachel Maddow in the studio. :)

I’ll take you in a nano second over Obermouth. Was hoping Dan Patrick would have punch his teeth out long ago at ESPN. Look for Oberobama to go work for the Left Wing Neo- Nazi George Soros in the near future.

Thank you. You’re restored my hope that opposing political sides, though lacking in political judgement, can at least be decent judges of character. For what it’s worth, I tend to lean right, but Sean Hannity causes a reflexive impulse to want to punch him in the mouth.

Olberman was kind of a joke even back when he was a local news LA sportscaster in the late 80s. I never understood how people could ever take him seriously.

Couldnt happen to a better guy. Can we give him back to Japan?

  7. thebigtim2012 - Sep 27, 2013 at 5:58 PM

Japan won’t take him back. He makes Godzilla look like the geico gecko

  8. ndnut - Sep 27, 2013 at 6:01 PM

Specifically, the wacky cartoon gecko in their new commercial.

I think ‘Ol Bobby has a couple screws loose.

  10. scoutsaysweitersisabust - Sep 27, 2013 at 6:13 PM

We finally got rid of Ozzie Guillen, now it’s time to get this jackass out of the spotlight.

  11. ajg314 - Sep 27, 2013 at 6:22 PM

Keith Olbermann? I mean, really? How is it that this arrogant, pompous nutjob keeps getting hired by people? These networks haven’t learned their lesson? Talk about having a few screws loose.

    • badintent - Sep 27, 2013 at 10:48 PM

Keith has industrial strength knee pads and an Ever Ready mouth. For all the flaming liberals that own the Networks.Gulp !

  12. Kevin Gillman - Sep 27, 2013 at 6:23 PM

It’s ironic that TBS decided to use Keith Olbermann, who isn’t exactly a “company” man and sent Bobby to the curve.

  13. earpaniac - Sep 27, 2013 at 6:37 PM

    Who are you kidding?
“Self-Centered” and “tv” go together like pizza and beer.

  14. wallio - Sep 27, 2013 at 6:50 PM

The only thing Olbermann deserves “based on merit” is unemployment.

  15. gloccamorra - Sep 27, 2013 at 8:16 PM

You guys have Olbermann all wrong. His descent to rock-bottom is complete. He’s been chastened, and is looking for redemption, if not resurrection. Bobby is still spiraling toward the Big Splat, and isn’t ready.

  16. 13arod - Sep 27, 2013 at 8:22 PM

    booby is such an idiot

    • badintent - Sep 27, 2013 at 10:50 PM

So are you.You have that in common with Keith. It’s Bobby, not booby.

  17. eagles512 - Sep 27, 2013 at 11:24 PM

    Olbermann has said much worse.
