Indians closer Chris Perez has allowed a total of six runs in his last two appearances and has a 7.52 ERA since the start of August. As a result, manager Terry Francona has removed him from the closer’s role, reports WTAM’s Nick Camino.

On the season, Perez has a career-worst 4.33 ERA in 54 innings, converting 25 of 30 save opportunities.

ESPN’s Buster Olney speculates that Joe Smith or Justin Masterson could be used as the team’s closer going forward. Winners of seven in a row and 12 of their last 14, the Indians are clutching onto a one-game lead over the Rangers for the second AL Wild Card with three games remaining. They trail the Rays for the first Wild Card spot by one game.

Just like Lincecum was huge out of the pen in October for SF last year, Masterson could be huge for Cleveland if they make it in.

After hearing this, he most likely will be so upset he’s probably going to have to see if his dog got any “shipments” lately

The Cardinals look even smarter now for having traded Perez away when they did.

Not really, he was an all star before this season and was one of the best closers the last two years. This year he went wayyyyyyy down hill.

what took so long. should have traded him during last off season when we could have gotten something for him.he was blowing saves last year and still got praised for some reason. it was nice to watch masterson and albers show gas can perez how to handle closing out a game last night. we would have complete control of wildcard or even al central crown without perez giving up whip lash shots on a daily basis
