Mat Latos has been considered the likely favorite to start the Wild Card play-in game against the Pirates at PNC Park on Tuesday, but Reds manager Dusty Baker told John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer after today’s game that Johnny Cueto will get the call.

Latos probably would have been the choice if he was 100 percent, but Baker said that his arm is “barking” right now. The good news is that Cueto has been solid since returning from his lat strain, allowing two runs (one earned) over 12 innings while striking out 10 batters and walking four.

Cueto will be opposed by Francisco Liriano, who has a 1.47 ERA in 11 starts at home this season.

This sounds like a disaster waiting to happen

    • dan1111 - Sep 29, 2013 at 3:28 AM

Baker’s motto is, “go with the hot hand, not the barking arm”.

Why is this a disaster when Cueto is one of the top pitchers in the game?

    • 27buckeye27 - Sep 29, 2013 at 8:21 AM

How do you figure this is a disaster waiting to happen? That makes zero sense. Cueto is one of the top pitchers in the game and the ace of the reds staff. He showed in that he has not lost anything so I would take him over Latos even if Latos is 100%

If I were Dusty I would have Chapman ready to go multiple innings if needed in this WC game.

Hurdle announced before today’s game that he if the Pirates won today he was going to sit Gerrit Cole from his regular start tomorrow, and have him ready for long relief on Monday. So, I guess that’s going to be the plan now.

How many Bucco’s will Dusty order Cueto to hit in the first two innings?

    • crookedstick - Sep 28, 2013 at 8:28 PM

Probably one less than Hurdle does with Liriano.

The over/under on how many innings cueto lasts before suffering a lat injury is 3 1/3

    • 1rdd - Sep 29, 2013 at 8:55 AM

Let’s hope the injury cueto gets is a career ending injury.

Cole is there in case Liriano falters, however he has been great against the Reds at home this season (sub 2 ERA) and the 3 big Reds hitters OPS drops significantly against him on the road (Choo’s goes down nearly 400 points!).

I don’t know how anyone outside of Reds fans can’t be rooting for the Pirates after going through 21 years that absolutely no one else in baseball can relate to. Every single solitary space that a fan can squeeze into will be filled for that game on Tuesday Night. An entire generation from birth-18 came and went without seeing a winning season or a playoff appearance. It’s going to be an incredible scene.

Believe it or not, plenty of people will root against the Pirates because fans tend to do crossovers in sports. A lot of people across the country hate the Steelers, so they will be neutral to the Pirates, at best.

21 years no one else can relate to? How about the 15 years the reds had? Or god knows how many its been for the royals? Or the expos/nats?

yes its great to see your team in the playoffs for the first time in literally a generation but don’t over romanticize your place in baseball history as a hapless team or cubs fans will come after you for trying to steal their shtick.

    Baker = Terrible manager.

  7. junglerat524 - Sep 29, 2013 at 7:50 AM

Won’t matter. The Reds just don’t seem to give a crap anymore. Time for Dusty to go

  8. 27buckeye27 - Sep 29, 2013 at 8:25 AM

Cueto, with LeCure and Marshal in short relief and Chapman to close. I like the reds chances with having 4 all- star caliber pitchers for 1 game. If they could hit the dam ball i would like them better

    • ilovekneegrows - Sep 29, 2013 at 10:27 AM

Liriano, Cole, Melancon, and Grilli = 4 all-star caliber pitchers as well.

Maybe sissy boy Cueto will go around kicking the Pirates in the head before the game and give them all career ending concussions like he did to the Cardinals LaRue. Cueto should be out of baseball. I hope the Pirates slaughter the Reds and Cueto goes down with a career ending arm injury. Let’s go Pirates!!!

Momma should have spent a little extra teaching you about sportsmanship and NOT wishing bad things to happen to others. Ever heard of Karma brother?!?!

Reds pitching is strong enough…their offense needs to heat up!
