Dan Uggla to be left off Braves’ roster for NLDS

From beat writer Mark Bowman of MLB.com:

Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez met with some players regarding roster decisions after the team held a workout that was closed to media members on Tuesday at Turner Field.  An industry source said Uggla was informed that he will not be part of the 25-man roster the Braves will use during their best-of-five NLDS matchup against the Dodgers.

Uggla got $13 million this year and is owed another $26 million through 2015, but the 33-year-old batted .099 with a .416 OPS over his final 129 regular-season plate appearances and the Braves have grown comfortable with Elliot Johnson at second base.

The Braves will evaluate the health of all their players Wednesday before making the roster official.

That’s cool bro, just more time to lift weights.

    • skids003 - Oct 2, 2013 at 10:22 AM

I hate this for Uggla, but understand it. He is a really nice guy, does a load of charity work. I sure wish he could turn it around, for his sake. Really nice guy.

      • mtr75 - Oct 2, 2013 at 1:41 PM

Sounds like the biggest charity work is the Braves paying him $13,000,000 to hit .179.

  2. koufaxmitzvah - Oct 1, 2013 at 6:31 PM

So is that why Lasik eye surgery isn’t considered cheating?

    • bravesfan1966 - Oct 1, 2013 at 8:42 PM

Very funny! They need to leave BJ Upton off the damn roster, too!!!

      • misterj167 - Oct 1, 2013 at 11:50 PM

BJ can be used as a defensive replacement. Kinda sucks that the highest paid player in Braves history has to be used that way, but that’s how it is. Speed and defense, at least, don’t slump. Uggla on the other hand is an average defensive player at best, and you don’t need a guy whose biggest offensive contribution is an ability to draw walks. With Elliot Johnson at second and Simmons at short, that’s a pretty good middle infield defense, and Freddie is a great defender at first. Chris Johnson has the range of igneous rock but is one of the top hitters in the league.

      • bigcooterb - Oct 2, 2013 at 4:48 PM

BJ as a defensive replacement? Somebody besides Uggla needs Laser Surgery.

  3. sjtorpitt - Oct 1, 2013 at 6:35 PM

    Hahaha, @jesus
Can’t even sustain a .100 BA after eye surgery.. That clearly wasn’t the problem.

    • bravesfan1966 - Oct 1, 2013 at 8:47 PM

What’s amazing is that in contrast to Uggla’s inability to hit the ball, is the fact that he walks so much! He OBVIOUSLY sees the ball well. His major problem is that he tries to pull everything and hit it out of the park, which results in a “roundhouse” type swing at pitches on the outer half of the zone and down and out pitches. Until he decides he wants to be a complete hitter, and keep his hands back in order to drive pitches to all fields, he will suck at hitting!

  4. Stiller43 - Oct 1, 2013 at 6:38 PM

If you considered lasik eye surgery cheating, contacts, glasses, et al would be cheating. The comparison of lasik to something like PEDs is idiotic at best

    • hackerjay - Oct 1, 2013 at 7:03 PM

Why is it idiotic? In one case you are using medical science to improve your body and make it better than it was before, and in the other case you are using medical science to…improve your body and make it better than it was before. Which is which?

      • Arods Other Doctor - Oct 1, 2013 at 7:26 PM

If you don’t understand why correcting a defect is different than artificially achieving a level of performance that is not naturally possible through chemicals that are harmful in the long term, then you, sir, are dumb. It’s like claiming that a student studying is just as much cheating as is using a cheat sheet. It’s just idiotic.

      • koufaxmitzvah - Oct 1, 2013 at 7:39 PM

Can you associate the performance with the substance in the urine?

An HBT PhD = a law degree from PFT Planet. Hate to break it to you guys…

    • koufaxmitzvah - Oct 1, 2013 at 7:08 PM

Well, I don’t consider PEDs cheating.

      So that answers that.

      • heyblueyoustink - Oct 1, 2013 at 7:27 PM

Takes a lot of grit to take a needle in the ass.

      • koufaxmitzvah - Oct 1, 2013 at 7:37 PM

Needles or ADD medication? Or pot?

So many drugs. So many reasons to cry Cheater. And, still, the playing field will never be equal.

But back to Lasik eye surgery. Still not sure how this isn’t considered Cheating by people who can’t stand the extra reps in the weight room.

  5. missingdiz - Oct 1, 2013 at 6:44 PM

They need Uggla to bolster B. J. Upton’s self-esteem, since they owe Upton another $60 million. Upton can say “I’m way closer to .200 than Uggla.” And wealthier too.

    • biasedhomer - Oct 1, 2013 at 8:08 PM

2 of the worst bats in baseball.

      • nats128 - Oct 2, 2013 at 8:03 PM

and they still made the playoffs. That in itself is amazing.

  6. fearthehoody - Oct 1, 2013 at 6:47 PM

Looks like he has NO tickets to the gun show

  7. knowlegeforyou - Oct 1, 2013 at 7:07 PM

I think it may be time for a new hitting coach! Thumbs up if you agree

  8. kingscourt25 - Oct 1, 2013 at 7:22 PM

    Owl!

  9. tuberippin - Oct 1, 2013 at 7:25 PM

Remember when Dan Uggla was good at baseball?

    • bobulated - Oct 1, 2013 at 8:24 PM

Lets clarify; “Remember when Dan Uggla could hit?”
He was never “good” at baseball as a house plant with a glove duct taped to it would be as adequate in the field as Uggla.

  10. Walk - Oct 1, 2013 at 7:39 PM

Half way there. Sit bj and bring on todd Cunningham and we got a better roster for the playoffs.

  11. Marty Silvert - Oct 1, 2013 at 7:45 PM

Uggla probably could have done just as good if he just closed his eyes and took swings.

    • ozzies85dinger - Oct 1, 2013 at 8:57 PM

      Be the ball, Danny

  12. scdocal - Oct 1, 2013 at 9:16 PM

@master it’s dumb as hell because a lot of people are born with better than 20/20 vision and don’t need contacts or LASIK. Are u saying that the people who are born with good eyes are the only ones that can play professional ball.

  13. phillphan - Oct 1, 2013 at 9:33 PM

Where’s Craig on this? If the phillies had to pay 26 million to Uggla plus had given Upton 75 million it would have been the headline every day this season. Wait, I know, double standards. My bad

    • s0krat3s - Oct 1, 2013 at 10:17 PM

Yeah, double standards, because nobody talks about the Braves. Best record in baseball from beginning of August to late September and the only time they made the news on espn or fox sports was when they hit bryce harper. No mention of their success whatsoever this season.

      • Section 222 - Oct 2, 2013 at 10:05 PM

Not true. They make the news every time they cause a bench clearing brawl., led by that self-proclaimed enforcer of the unwritten rules of baseball, Brian McCann They’re the biggest crybabies in sports, as are their fans.

  14. spacemaker101 - Oct 1, 2013 at 9:38 PM

BJ brings stolen bases, defense, maybe a homer… And only reason I say him over Cunningham is bc BJ has experience..

    • swimmer2010 - Oct 1, 2013 at 9:57 PM

When it comes to defense, Brake Job makes ordinary plays look spectacular and he doesn’t make ANY spectacular plays. Jason Hayward or Jordan Schafer are both far, far BETTER center fielders than Brake Job…

      • s0krat3s - Oct 1, 2013 at 10:21 PM

Heyward or Schafer being better fielders is irrelevant. Nobody is talking about them vs BJ. We are talking about BJ vs the other candidates for the 25th spot. As much as we dislike him he can still field better than most, and can be used as a pinch-runner.

  15. spacemaker101 - Oct 1, 2013 at 9:39 PM

Undeadjesus hahah he probably said that forreal tho.

  16. poffcorn - Oct 1, 2013 at 10:44 PM

What y’all don’t get is that without uggla on the roster we now have 4 infielders. Incase you didn’t know that’s a problem. Yes every braves fan can admit how poorly he played this year but they can’t put Janish above uggla because uggla isn’t a terrible defender and at least he brings the long ball threat that Janish doesn’t. All I’m saying is Janish doesn’t need to be our 5th infielder

  17. spacemaker101 - Oct 1, 2013 at 11:09 PM

Janish really doesn’t need to be.. ALL he brings is a good glove late in the ball game I would rather have uggla’s homerun presence…

  18. jr7x11 - Oct 2, 2013 at 11:42 AM

LASIK is cheating?? That’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard! It’s a surgery correcting something…so is Tommy John surgery cheating?? When an athlete breaks a bone and a metal rod or plate is surgically implanted is that cheating??? So Jason Heyward is cheating because he has metal in his face???

  19. bigcooterb - Oct 2, 2013 at 4:49 PM

BJ is among the worst outfielders in the league.

  20. scdocal - Oct 2, 2013 at 8:07 PM

@nats. Bitter are we. Just goes to show the depth of young talent that they have
