Quote of the Day: Terry Francona

Oct 1, 2013, 9:14 AM EDT

Hey Terry, how did the Indians finish 10-0 in September?

In light of the events of 2011-12, I eagerly anticipate yet totally fear either a Red Sox-Indians matchup or a Red Sox-Dodgers matchup. If either happens, we’ll have to break out the hip-waders to get through the record-high levels of narrative swelling the rivers of baseball commentary.

Too lazy to look, but wasn’t this yesterday’s quote of the day as well?

  2. grapes911 - Oct 1, 2013 at 9:19 AM

    Yes.

  3. proudlycanadian - Oct 1, 2013 at 9:24 AM

Somehow, I expect that Cleveland’s win streak is going to end at 10 games. They will no longer be playing the dregs of The AL.

    • happytwinsfan - Oct 1, 2013 at 10:26 AM

“dregs of the AL”? how un canadian of you.

      • proudlycanadian - Oct 1, 2013 at 10:53 AM

        Yep!

    • indaburg - Oct 1, 2013 at 11:27 AM

I hope you’re right about the Indians win streak ending but the Rays are capable of playing like the dregs of the AL. That’s why we’re playing in Cleveland as the 2nd Wild Card. Because we played like shit most of September. I refuse to be confident about tomorrow night. Anything can happen in one crazy night. This is why no one wants to go into the post-season as a Wild Card.

Also, the Indians may have been playing sub-.500 teams, but they still had to actually execute. They did not take it for granted. Winning 10 straight in MLB is no easy feat, especially with so much at stake. I give them credit.

This reverse jinx act is beneath your dignity.

      • indaburg - Oct 1, 2013 at 3:32 PM

It worked like a charm Monday night.

      • indaburg - Oct 3, 2013 at 12:20 AM

The Rays don’t stand a chance against the Sox. We’re 7-12 against you, you guys have home field advantage, you’re well rested, Big Papi, Pedroia, Koji, the beards… we can’t fight those beards.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 3, 2013 at 1:30 AM

Don’t even start – with the momentum building with that young juggernaut – coming to the home of 1,000 coats of green paint – where we *invented* the reverse jinx.

      • indaburg - Oct 3, 2013 at 7:31 AM

        Too funny.

Honestly when I saw the Rays had won 7 of 19 from the season series, I was surprised. My memory had them at 3 wins. I remember reading a stat that the Rays have actually outhit the Sox by a good amount in terms of BA but RISP. The Rays have been putrid. Hopefully, they’ve been watching lots of video of the Cardinals batting because apparently they’ve discovered the secret to clutch hitting.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 3, 2013 at 7:45 AM

We’re going to use hat tricks to shut down some key players. We figured out how to get in Delmon Young’s head – we’re going to have all our hats cut down to yarmulkes. We’re going to have the male fans behind the floating carpets’ dugout wear pink hats to screw with Yunel – and when Lueke comes out of the pen we’ll chant ‘no means no’ — don’t know if that will be enough to offset Luke Scott’s glee at the government shutdown. But we’re ready for the Karma Kings.

      • indaburg - Oct 3, 2013 at 10:45 AM

See? Another reason the Rays won’t win. Your fans will mess with their heads and drive them loco.

To be fair, the girl was unconscious so she never actually said no, technically speaking. (Ok, so that doesn’t sound any better…)

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 3, 2013 at 10:53 AM

You & Luke’s attitude on roofies being what it is and all …. right?

Maybe Maddon does his season-long carnival barker act to distract everyone from how unpleasant that locker room is. Ah well, at least David Price will get paroled from the tumulus next year.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 3, 2013 at 7:37 PM

This game is pretty much exactly how I envision tomorrow going – same box score by uni colors & home/away.

      • indaburg - Oct 4, 2013 at 4:46 PM

        Fuck me. Jesus.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 4, 2013 at 6:22 PM

Unk is big in the predictions racket.

      • indaburg - Oct 5, 2013 at 2:58 PM

You said they’d be chanting “No means no”, not “My-ers.”

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 5, 2013 at 3:09 PM

It wouldn’t be appropriate since Lueke’s not on the alds roster. I did call the arc of the AJ Burnett game tho.

      • indaburg - Oct 5, 2013 at 3:59 PM

Eh, since when does propriety matter to a Boston fan? I had one taunting me at a baby shower today (yeah, one of the curses of being female–stupid boring baby showers). I was laughing. You seriously want to get into an argument at some chick’s baby shower? I took the high road…

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 5, 2013 at 4:08 PM

My sister once threw a co-Ed no- alcohol baby shower. I will never forgive her.

That Sawks fan can kiss my ass – and it’s a little early to celebrate. Momentum = next starter.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 5, 2013 at 5:38 PM

        Good luck kiddo

      • indaburg - Oct 6, 2013 at 7:38 AM

We have just where we want you: elimination games.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 6, 2013 at 8:05 AM

        – You’ve got no arms left!
        — Yes I have
        — Look!
        — It’s just a flesh wound

      • indaburg - Oct 6, 2013 at 8:05 AM

        We’ll bleed on you.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 6, 2013 at 8:10 AM

I take nothing for granted. Gotta love your fighting spirit tho. Hee-hee.

I’m watching Premier League Live – I watched 3 full matches yesterday – 2 on tap today followed seamlessly by Patriots. (Err – sorry about your Bucs. I always root for Schiano – he’s Belichick’s mini-me.)

      • indaburg - Oct 6, 2013 at 12:15 PM

I don’t watch much football. I tried, and I understand the basics. I know enough to dislike and respect your pretty boy quarterback, and distrust your coach. I’d rather watch hockey in the off-season. I like the Lightning.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 6, 2013 at 12:18 PM

In Belichick we trust – and Brady’s not really pretty. Hockey is great – I want my Whalers back!!

      • indaburg - Oct 7, 2013 at 11:16 AM

Brady is pretty. Has to be tough on Gisele. She’s the supermodel and she’s not the pretty one in that relationship. Rough loss yesterday, so I hear. I hope it’s foreshadowing for today and the other New England team.

Whalers. Big Hurricanes fan? First time I took my dad to a game, it was Carolina-TB. Lightning won 4-3 in OT after coughing up a 2 goal lead in the last min of regulation. Dad was hooked. No pun intended.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 7, 2013 at 11:21 AM

I’ve never heard of these “Hurricanes” you speak of. I just miss my Whalers.

Peter Karmanos of Compuware is on the permanent Unk list.

        Good luck today.

      • indaburg - Oct 7, 2013 at 11:46 AM

It’s hopeless, but hey, at least it’s a sell out.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 7, 2013 at 12:05 PM

Tomorrow night could be another sell out – think positive – where’s the fight? Where’s the defiance?

      • indaburg - Oct 7, 2013 at 5:17 PM

Defiance vacillates on a see-saw with realism.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 7, 2013 at 5:46 PM

Well – good luck tonight anyhow.

      • indaburg - Oct 7, 2013 at 7:33 PM

        No luck tonight whatsoever.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 7, 2013 at 7:35 PM

        Not so far. Especially Loney.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 7, 2013 at 8:20 PM

        Speed kills

      • indaburg - Oct 7, 2013 at 8:23 PM

The drinking has commenced. Dark n’ stormy. Cheers.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 7, 2013 at 8:25 PM

        See-saw going down?

      • indaburg - Oct 7, 2013 at 8:29 PM

        lol

It’s as if the Rays are a completely different team playing the Red Sox. Defensive miscues, mental mistakes, lack of–yes–clutch hitting. Their RISP batting average is dismal against the Sox. I also have to give your team credit. They are good. Goddamn ?!@#$#$$%z$%z$%. I actually scared the dog with my cursing when Joyce struck out with the bases loaded. Poor thing.

        2 for 17 with RISP.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 7, 2013 at 8:31 PM

        Shit fuck balls

      • indaburg - Oct 7, 2013 at 8:31 PM

Thank you, Longoria. Thank you. I’m not even cheering. Just a smile.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 7, 2013 at 8:32 PM

Reverse jinx mixed with appeasing Jobu. Pretty sneaky, sis.

      • indaburg - Oct 7, 2013 at 8:36 PM

Jobu likes spiced rum and ginger beer?

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 7, 2013 at 8:37 PM

Rum & chickens – but close enough.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 7, 2013 at 9:10 PM

Juliana Zobrist needs to leave that bleach alone. Gonna have to shave that pretty head soon.

      • indaburg - Oct 7, 2013 at 9:43 PM

Julianna Zobrist looks much prettier in her natural brunette too, but that might be my dark hair bias.

Thought Maddon was gonna get himself thrown out there. Tense times call for more rum.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 7, 2013 at 9:44 PM

He showed some restraint. Berry was soooooo out

      • indaburg - Oct 7, 2013 at 9:47 PM

        Yeah, he was.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 7, 2013 at 9:51 PM

I can’t sacrifice to Jobu so I’m gonna go give it up to Jah.

      • indaburg - Oct 7, 2013 at 10:01 PM

Why bunting should be punishable by death: Exhibit A.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 7, 2013 at 10:07 PM

        True dat.

Luck always turns. And Jobu obviously trumps Jah. Damn.

      • indaburg - Oct 7, 2013 at 10:09 PM

Still too early to get excited. The Sox still have 3 outs to go and too much firepower in that line up.

      • indaburg - Oct 7, 2013 at 10:17 PM

        See?

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 7, 2013 at 10:19 PM

I see nothing. Dear God he’s bunting.

      • indaburg - Oct 7, 2013 at 10:22 PM

        Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 7, 2013 at 10:22 PM

No one really wants to win this game.

      • indaburg - Oct 7, 2013 at 10:23 PM

        Uh, I do.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 7, 2013 at 10:28 PM

In the sense that I disagree with a lot of the moves that have been made.

      • indaburg - Oct 7, 2013 at 10:30 PM

        YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 7, 2013 at 10:30 PM

Oh well. Peavy v Hellboy. I like that matchup.

      • indaburg - Oct 7, 2013 at 10:34 PM

Oh, HELL, no!!!! I was happy until you said that. Son of a bitch. Seriously, I’m cursing his mother. NO!!!!!!!

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 7, 2013 at 10:35 PM

That’s what Gordon Edes’s twitter feed says.

      • indaburg - Oct 7, 2013 at 10:38 PM

I am checking, and it sounds correct. Oh, well. At least we won one. We didn’t get swept. There is some honor in that.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 7, 2013 at 10:40 PM

I’m just saying screw the reverse jinx & I agree with you. The Rays have pluck but no chance. So there.

      • indaburg - Oct 7, 2013 at 10:46 PM

No reverse jinx intended. Just look at Hellickson’s stats for the season. Awful. Simply awful. It would take a baseball miracle. Oh well. I was debating trying to get tickets to tomorrow’s game but I really don’t want to watch the Sox celebrate.

The HR went into the rays tank. Cool. Lobaton is a really, really nice guy too (not the prototypical Ray). Here he is carrying my little girl: http://indaburg.files.wordpress.com/2013/08/20130804_180133.jpeg
Check out the bruises on his right arm.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 7, 2013 at 10:49 PM

Awww – cute. I did some catching – it’s a terrible job. The Molina family was born to suffer.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 8, 2013 at 8:36 PM

        Good luck

      • indaburg - Oct 8, 2013 at 10:08 PM

        Likewise.

This game is causing my stomach to digest itself.

      • indaburg - Oct 8, 2013 at 10:13 PM

That is no HIBP. Victorino leans over the plate and makes no attempt to get out. Bullshit.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 8, 2013 at 10:16 PM

There she is – all fired up.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 8, 2013 at 10:31 PM

Maddon is like a wizard. Prolly no one was happier than you that he got out such a quick hook for Hellboy.

      • indaburg - Oct 8, 2013 at 10:56 PM

I was ecstatic Maddon had the quick hook tonight. Reminded me of the old White Rat, Herzog.

Maddon is like a wizard. Joe Pos described him perfectly in his post today about over-managing playoff managers and bunts: “The Rays scored a run in the bottom of the eighth in what was a Joe Maddon concerto.” Yep. The eight last night was a Maddon concerto.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 8, 2013 at 10:57 PM

        I am his Salieri.

      • indaburg - Oct 8, 2013 at 11:10 PM

        Oh, fuck.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 8, 2013 at 11:11 PM

This inning suffered from Molina deficiency.

      • indaburg - Oct 8, 2013 at 11:15 PM

        Sit down, Papi.

        So you’re Maddon’s jealous inferior?

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 8, 2013 at 11:17 PM

Yep – that’s about the size of it. He finally made a move that didn’t work but you can’t second guess it.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 8, 2013 at 11:48 PM

Breslow went to Yale – highly educated fastball.

      • indaburg - Oct 9, 2013 at 12:14 AM

        Now that was a HIBP.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 9, 2013 at 12:23 AM

No getting out of the way of that. Rodney put 2 under Ellsbury’s chin & 1 under Victirino’s before hitting him too.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 9, 2013 at 12:31 AM

Totally worthy opponent – glad you stayed home for this one.

      • indaburg - Oct 9, 2013 at 6:20 AM

Congratulations. Yeah, there would have been tears shed.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 9, 2013 at 10:08 AM

Plus it’s prolly harder to find spiced rum. ;)

Thanks burgie – you know I’m a closet Rays fan. I mean floating carpets.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 13, 2013 at 10:49 AM

Sometimes I really hate HBT. Days like today checking in is a form of self-abuse. Even the soccer guys are calling me an idiot now.

      • indaburg - Oct 13, 2013 at 2:45 PM

Oh, no–not the soccer guys! What the soccer guys?

I agree with you regarding Matthew. Nice trolling. I don’t understand how having incredible plate discipline and losing 1-0 to a very good pitcher is an ugly loss. I loved Anibel Sanchez during the season– he was one of my fantasy guys.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 13, 2013 at 2:52 PM

From the moment the Blue Cowboy screwed Lester & then complained on the mic about getting “shown up” I already had a grim sense of what was to follow. A Livan-sized floating K zone for one guy & every close call going to the D. Plus lots of delayed, ‘screw you for living’ calls that waited for guys to be heading down the line or at the dugout. Just the full self-aggrandizing package.

I like calling Matthew ‘MP’ cuz his name sounds Canadian & MP makes him sound like a Mountie or something.

        How’s things?

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 13, 2013 at 2:54 PM

Not to mention insufferable Historio – trolling Big Papi while Jhonny Jhuicer carries her team. Just ick.

      • indaburg - Oct 13, 2013 at 5:20 PM

She’s got a touch of homeritis. I try to cut people a little slack around this time of the year. Emotions are riding a little high. I try to be fair even when I don’t like a team. I don’t care who wins at this point really. I just want well played, fairly called games.

I thought some of the checked swing calls were, upon review, actually strikes. The strike zone wasn’t egregiously terrible, although there were definitely some balls called for strikes and delayed calls. (I’m always ready to jump down Joe West because he’s just a dick.)

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 13, 2013 at 5:41 PM

West made it personal – he’s been fined many times for talking shit about the Sawks as well – he’s a joke. He didn’t give Anibal every call but he squeezed the crap out of Lester. Totally inconsistent & belligerent about it. Haaaaate the Blue Cowboy.

I’m sick of telling people what happened with Ortiz in 2003 – it’s not hard to find facts. One must be interested in facts though.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 13, 2013 at 9:56 PM

I want to puke right now.

      • indaburg - Oct 13, 2013 at 10:00 PM

Only one hit 14 innings? Tigers pitching is good, but come on. They’re not THIS good. Although, dang. Scherzer’s stuff is sick tonight.

        Oh, sheesh. Miggy. 2-0.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 13, 2013 at 10:02 PM

Scherzer’s stuff is much better than Anibal’s was last night. Sanchez got a lot of help – Max doesn’t need it.

      • indaburg - Oct 13, 2013 at 10:38 PM

I’m being accused of rooting for the Red Sox. I’ve never been so insulted.

I’m just pissed the Tigers are making it look easy.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 13, 2013 at 10:43 PM

You have the right to root for the Sawks – the better we do the better the Rays look in retrospect.

      • indaburg - Oct 13, 2013 at 10:47 PM

That’s what I was trying to explain.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 13, 2013 at 10:49 PM

That’s what you get for arguing with a troll.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 13, 2013 at 11:23 PM

Papi! Historio can suck my titties!!

      • indaburg - Oct 14, 2013 at 10:23 AM

        LMAO

Quite a comeback. I was watching through very sleepy eyes and felt vindicated. Not so easy to beat these Sox, is it?

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 14, 2013 at 11:38 AM

The Sawks don’t quit – and Papi takes all that hate & makes Haterade.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 13, 2013 at 10:50 AM

In fairness though – Luke is still cool. Good guy.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 8, 2013 at 11:09 PM

        Woo-hoo!!

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 7, 2013 at 9:20 PM

Catwalks – white ceiling – shorter left field porch than my little league field – it’s too bad they can’t have this game at an actual baseball stadium.

      • indaburg - Oct 7, 2013 at 9:41 PM

The stadium is ridiculous. A team of this caliber deserves a much nicer stadium. I’m trying to figure out a way to pilfer Marlins Park sans Tommy.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 7, 2013 at 8:27 PM

Maybe they were just waiting for you to tip a glass.

Oh. Sorry. Still, there’s plenty you could do with this one. For instance you could make a hat or a brooch or a pterodactyl…

  8. RoyHobbs39 - Oct 1, 2013 at 9:51 AM

Easy guys, Craig’s Twitter Machine is a little low on batteries and he did not receive this until today. Bill’s is solar powered and with the overcast day, he may not get it until tomorrow.

  9. unclemosesgreen - Oct 1, 2013 at 12:05 PM

Only the loathesome Boston media could have so successfully vilified such a good manager and a nice guy like Francona while simultaneously slandering both chicken and beer.

Francona, chicken and beer are all great in and of themselves. How did this story ever have wings? I’m still mystified. In protest, I’m about to order a disgusting amount of hot wings and wash them down with a Guiness. Take that, all you fucking chicken-haters.

If you’re trying to start a chicken v. beef debate, I’m gonna call dibs on salmon.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 1, 2013 at 1:33 PM

Well now that’s brain food and there’s little or no place for that in a major league clubhouse.

But for me – chicken appetizer them steak and salmon sounds like dinner.

Every response I just thought of was dirty, so….how ’bout them Yankees?

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 1, 2013 at 1:39 PM

        Air surf & turf.

It’s wrong not to express dirty thoughts – every time you do that an angel loses its’ wings.

V is pitching well – he’s on a good run of form. I’m sure you blame the shutout on Don Kelly somehow.

      • historiophiliac - Oct 6, 2013 at 11:46 AM

        I only wish I could.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 6, 2013 at 11:48 AM

        Maybe it was Inge’s fault.

      • historiophiliac - Oct 6, 2013 at 11:56 AM

Oh, I had forgotten about him.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 6, 2013 at 12:01 PM

        Hee-hee.

Honestly the boolpen has been Tigers’ Achilles’ heel all year.

      • historiophiliac - Oct 6, 2013 at 12:02 PM

I don’t know that I think that was all the bullpen, but okay. Feel free to join in with the jackasses claiming that Gray pitched better than V.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 6, 2013 at 12:07 PM

Can’t pitch much better than V has been – looking like 1.0 again.

      • historiophiliac - Oct 6, 2013 at 12:09 PM

I know, right. He was fantastic last night. His focus was great too. It made for an excellent game…unlike your series. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ Poor floating carpets.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 6, 2013 at 12:11 PM

Game 2 was a game. I’m still tense until it’s over – but yeah Tiggers had the game of the day.

      • historiophiliac - Oct 6, 2013 at 12:32 PM

I hope Monday is good. Day game and my boss is out for the week. I’ll be listening at my desk. :D

Francona may have been vilified by the Boston media however, in the eyes of Red Sox Nation he is still loved and respected as the one of the best Managers we have ever had. John Farrell has been great at turning the Sox around since that idiot Valentine left town. We have brought in some unbelievable talent, and I expect we will be playing some World Series ball this year.

    • patsfansknowitall - Oct 1, 2013 at 1:39 PM

by “We” do you mean that you’re part of the team while sitting at home?

  11. psousa1 - Oct 1, 2013 at 2:07 PM

He also could have added “I also didn’t have my supposed friend, Theo Epstein, leaking out to Bob Holer of the Boston Herald that I was going through a divorce and hooked on pain killers”

  12. pastabelly - Oct 1, 2013 at 2:09 PM

How did the Boston media villify Tito? Francona is a Boston icon and always will be. It was time for a change. If media members questioned whether Francona should have been held accountable for negative leadership elements gaining traction on the team, that’s fair. The same criticism also was leveled at team ownership and Epstein for bringing in that element of pampered spoiled and self absorbed personalities to the team. Tito couldn’t deal with it and who knows whether Farrell could either. It probably was important for the Sox to clear house and that it was probably was time for Tito to go (along with Epstein, Crawford, Gonzales, and Beckett). Given the current composition of the team, Francona would probably do just as good of a job as Farrell. Farrell just doesn’t have the taint that Tito picked up from having to manage that 2011 cast of characters.

I’m just curious when the boston media dragged ownership through the mud, like they did with Francona? As psousa1 said, leaking to the press that Francona had a drug abuse problem wasn’t to start an intervention.
