Astros make changes to coaching staff after 111 losses

Houston manager Bo Porter’s job is safe following another 100-loss season, but the Astros announced multiple changes to his coaching staff.

Pitching coach Doug Brocail will leave that job and become a special assistant to general manager Jeff Luhnow and the team has fired both first base coach Dave Clark and bullpen coach Dennis Martinez.

Luhnow explained the changes by telling Richard Dean of CSNHouston.com: “Bo and I discussed how we can improve next year and came to the conclusion that bringing in a few new and different voices would help.”

Yeah, that move to replace the first base coach, is the pivotal move to advance this franchise. As if anybody on the Astros ever gets to first base. He is Baseball’s version of the Maytag repairman.

I liked Dave Clark, so I disagree with this. I mean the first base coach really? How about you open up your check book and sign some talent. I was there on Sunday against the Yankees, and they didn’t even show up and you still lost. Once it went in to extra innings i made the decision to leave because i knew your pitching would blow it somehow. I was right thank god i didnt sit there waiting and get stuck in Houston traffic on my way out

Luhnow has put a lot of pieces in place but there’s obviously a lot of pressure from fans to make changes now. I don’t necessarily like Bo Porter as a manager but I definitely appreciate that Luhnow is staying to his blueprints. Being an Astros fan will be much easier in a few years.

Thank Buddha. I’ve been stomping my feet and throwing fits since April for the Astros to get rid of that stupid bullpen coach; that SOB. I mean, he is the one to blame, right? Not the lack of talent, inexperience or baby-faced kids they run out there to the mound. I totally agree giving the axe to the man who answers a telephone 320 feet from his superior, relays what was just said, and reads off a clipboard about hitters tendencies and the upcoming lineup. Talk about a guy who can really run a franchise in the ground. Good riddance, bullpen monitor.

    It wasn’t the coaching.

The National Guard is being summoned to handle crowd control at the Astros season ticket window, now that these franchise altering changes have been made.

We can only hope no one gets trampled in the uncontrollable madness……

    The perfect game Denis Martinez?

I’ve got no problem with Brocail and Martinez getting booted off the coaching staff. Yes, they were given a terrible group of pitchers to work with, but they didn’t make a single bit of progress with any of them. There was zero improvement in the pitching department throughout the season.

Canning Dave Clark seems odd. Must have been a personality conflict with Porter or something. Or maybe he just wanted out.

Bo porter will be a good manager, these guys where there when he took over the team,he wants his guys in,he gave the holdovers a year,a year he knew was going to be wasted, didn’t like their performance and canned them, simple

They should give Porter mercy and let him go to return to Washington…

crane is gonna spend a little money this year.this season was an evaluation process.he cant go dumpster diving this offseason either.these young players need atleast a couple quality veteran stars around them. you cant have the blind leading the blind.a good mix of above average veterans and young players with maybe one superstar along with altuve and company would be a good start.get rid of wallace and some of these other .220 batting averages! harrell sucks as well and needs to be gone!

Dave Clark is seen as a future big league manager. Perhaps Bo Porter felt threatened by him.
