TBS totally blew the pregame for last night’s Reds-Pirates tilt

Oct 2, 2013, 1:00 PM EDT

old TV

As Amanda Rykoff writes at Awful Announcing today, TBS messed up royally last night.

Rather than show the insane excitement of the PNC Park crowd and give us the player introductions, the national anthem — which was sung by Andrew McCutchen‘s mom! — and all of the other pomp and circumstance of the long-awaited return of the playoffs to Pittsburgh, we got studio filler and chatter. Go read her indictment of the proceedings and get mad. And you should be mad, because you missed great stuff.

I’ve been around TV studios a bit in the past couple of years and I understand that it’s hard for that kind of operation to be nimble at times. There are so many moving parts and people to answer to that you can’t just cut away without warning.  But here they had warning. Ever since it was known that there would be a playoff game in Pittsburgh, people have been talking about how crazy the scene would be.  And TBS thought we’d rather watch people in the studio talking about that crazy scene than actually showing it to us.

Here’s part of it, though. It’s McCutchen’s mom singing “The Star Spangled Banner.”

I blame Keith Obermann. During the Pirates-Reds game, they showed a clip of Terry Francona’s press conference, and Keith had to try and make a joke out of it. I realized the Pirates were dominating the Reds at the time, but how about talking about that, rather than try and make lame jokes?

The Rockies Horror Pitching Show was pretty damn funny.

    • moogro - Oct 2, 2013 at 2:37 PM

Uh, it’s the guys pointing the cameras that show you what you see, not the subjects being videotaped. It’s the producer/director. They should have thought this through ahead of time, and in lieu of that, called an audible. Studio talent don’t care how many times it cuts to them. Should be a firing offense.

The absolute worst part about it is having to listen to that asshat Olbermann. I won’t turn it on until the game begins. That pretenious d-bag is harder to stomach than Chris Berman.

    • normcash - Oct 2, 2013 at 1:50 PM

NOBODY is harder to stomach than Berman! At least Olbermann is knowledgeable.
It’s the old story—TBS spends a fortune on a studio crew and feels like it MUST show them.
All the networks do it. What we haven’t yet seen, I don’t believe, is some minor celebrity
in the stands who just happens to star in an upcoming TBS show—but I’m sure that’s
just around the corner…if not on TBS then for sure when Fox starts its telecasts.

I believe the verb for this would be “Caliendoing” the broadcast. God, he might have been a funny guy, but I absolutely refused to watch his show. I was completely sick of him before it ever aired!

  3. chip56 - Oct 2, 2013 at 1:21 PM

TBS screwed up by having Keith Olbermann and Pedro in the first place.

  4. gbrim - Oct 2, 2013 at 1:25 PM

Olbermann has a niche following but hasn’t been mainstream for years. He needs a platform where his fans can enjoy him and the rest of us don’t have to watch or listen.

    • jdd428 - Oct 2, 2013 at 2:03 PM

Studio shows in general are weak. … But KO does have that platform where his fans can enjoy him now: his own show on ESPN2 – and it’s very good. Aside from the 30 for 30s, it’s the only thing worth watching on the Worldwide Leader Network.

I liked Pedro and Dirk but DeRosa needs a lot of coaching. He’s a bright guy that came across as a jerk.

    McCutchen inherited his mom’s hair!

  7. 18thstreet - Oct 2, 2013 at 2:49 PM

I don’t understand why anyone watches pre-game shows. It feels like there are more commercials, per minute, in the pre-game than just about any other type of TV. And the content itself is usually terrible, especially if you go into the games with ANY level of knowledge about the teams.

Yes, TBS blew it. But every pre-game show is awful. It’s hard to believe it wouldn’t be more cost-effective to just show a re-run of Malcolm in the Middle.

    • petey1999 - Oct 2, 2013 at 3:20 PM

I hope they get better, ’cause we’re stuck with them for most of the month. Not that Fox is likely to be any better.

  8. garythebat - Oct 2, 2013 at 3:08 PM

I find the level of outrage on this issue completely hilarious. We’re supposed to be up in arms because they didn’t broadcast the national anthem and player introductions? Sure, that would’ve been better than the usual inane studio chatter, but it’s not like we were deprived of the Breaking Bad finale or anything.

  9. nothanksimdriving123 - Oct 2, 2013 at 3:10 PM

Pre-game shows that don’t let fans enjoy the stadium excitement all suck. That’s a given. Watching this video, either my computer or Mrs Cutch’s mic was faulty. And with all due respect, that was OK, because what little I did hear I didn’t much like. Sorry, but while openminded, on our anthem I’m old-school. It has notes. Sing them. If you want to show off your great range, save that for your CD of pop songs, or whatever.

    Who cares!!!!

  11. bengals512003 - Oct 2, 2013 at 4:21 PM

sorry, blo me was meant for bengal 512003

    • drone501 - Oct 3, 2013 at 12:38 AM

      blow me

  12. Marty McKee - Oct 2, 2013 at 4:28 PM

A network that regularly employs Chip Caray as an announcer obviously doesn’t know what its audience wants to see.

  13. ch0psuey - Oct 2, 2013 at 6:18 PM

    Mic Check Mic Check 1 2 3 .

    • nothanksimdriving123 - Oct 2, 2013 at 6:56 PM

Hey, come on, PNC only opened 12 years ago, so you have to expect some glitches.

  14. provguard - Oct 2, 2013 at 7:14 PM

All these sports shows do too much build up for the games. I could care less what these used-to-be-ballplayers have to say. Not every game is a first time for the viewers…

  15. bengals512003 - Oct 2, 2013 at 7:27 PM

Pirates won’t go far anyway just like their 0-4 steelers

    • pens5829 - Oct 2, 2013 at 8:00 PM

Enjoy your offseason. Reds choked again. Just like the Bungals do each and every year. When will your Bungals quite choking and win a meaningful game?

    • drone501 - Oct 3, 2013 at 12:43 AM

sorry ass reds coming back to stinkinnatti. cueto was money. lol drops the ball. never saw that before

  16. dugldo - Oct 2, 2013 at 7:44 PM

    TBS= horrible. Nuff said

  17. steelers88 - Oct 2, 2013 at 8:54 PM

I think TBS missed a huge opportunity to show the Pittsburgh skyline from PNC Park.

  18. J. Robert Hanson - Oct 3, 2013 at 11:56 AM

People in the sports studio’s love themselves and consider their thoughts of greater value than what sports fans think they wants.
