St. Louis tries to stay alive in Pittsburgh …

2B Matt Carpenter
RF Carlos Beltran
LF Matt Holliday
1B Matt Adams
C Yadier Molina
CF Jon Jay
3B David Freese
SS Pete Kozma
SP Michael Wacha

Cardinals manager Mike Matheny is sticking by his standard lineup, but the batting order changes a bit with Yadier Molina going back to the fifth spot after batting cleanup versus left-hander Francisco Liriano yesterday.

LF Starling Marte
2B Neil Walker
CF Andrew McCutchen
1B Justin Morneau
RF Marlon Byrd
3B Pedro Alvarez
C Russell Martin
SS Clint Barmes
SP Charlie Morton

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle is going with defense over offense and sticking with Clint Barmes at shortstop for the second straight game after giving Jordy Mercer a start there in Game 2. And that means Pittsburgh is trotting out the exact same lineup that won yesterday to take a 2-1 lead in the series.

Considering Morton’s lefty/righty splits over his career (lefties kill him), I am surprised (or, maybe not) that Matheny didn’t load up with Lefties. I expect at least 2 GIDP from Freese and Kozma today, depending on how many guys are on when they come up.

My confidence in Freese is at a new low, and that goes on offense and defense. He seems to have lost quickness in both. Right now, I would like to see Descalso in the line-up at third. It gives us the best defense, and to be honest, I think Descalso is as much of a threat as Freese.

gotta play the koz today, he had a solid game yesterday (minus the “era” dick calls it). we need carp and holliday to step it up today.

Yeah…Dick also called Kozma “Dave” during game #1. As I mentioned previously…he needs to stick to basketball.

Glad Yadier is back in the 5 hole where he belongs (w/ large mammal batting clean up).
And I am with you on Freese. I have been referring to him as David (Double Play ball) Freese for the last 3 or 4 months it seems. And dude simply will not run.
Yesterday was a prime example. 3-4-1 putout. Throw was wide and up the line.
If he busts it down the line he’s safe. Correction…if he just 3/4 asses it down the line he is safe.
Almost as embarrassing as his propensity for letting balls bounce off the top of his head…little league style.
