ALDS, Game 4: A’s-Tigers lineup

Oct 8, 2013, 2:20 PM EST

Jim Leyland, Bob Melvin AP AP

Lineups as the Tigers try to force a fifth game …

Athletics:
CF Coco Crisp
3B Josh Donaldson
SS Jed Lowrie
1B Brandon Moss
LF Yoenis Cespedes
DH Seth Smith
RF Josh Reddick
C Stephen Vogt
2B Eric Sogard

SP Dan Straily

A’s manager Bob Melvin didn’t change a thing after the Game 3 win, trotting out the same lineup and batting order, which includes Josh Donaldson in the No. 2 spot and Stephen Vogt back behind the plate.

Tigers:
CF Austin Jackson
RF Torii Hunter
3B Miguel Cabrera
1B Prince Fielder
DH Victor Martinez
LF Jhonny Peralta
C Alex Avila
2B Omar Infante
SS Jose Iglesias

SP Doug Fister

Tigers manager Jim Leyland is going with the same lineup and batting order he used in Game 3, which means more of Jhonny Peralta in left field despite some adventures there in his playoff outfield debut.

If you are going to sacrifice defense for offense, I’d rather see Peralta at SS and Dirks or Kelly in LF. Get a lead then put Iglesias in at SS.

    • sabathiawouldbegoodattheeighthtoo - Oct 8, 2013 at 2:51 PM

Isn’t Fister their groundballiest pitcher? Especially with Miggy limited from his usual “range” at 3B, they might want to keep the defensive boost Iglesias provides on the left side of the infield.

      • 3yardsandacloud - Oct 8, 2013 at 3:26 PM

Really Porcello is the “groundballiest pitcher”, but he isn’t going to start over Fister.

I think Peralta should be at 3B with Martinez catching and Miggy at DH. He’s clearly hurt and if you aren’t going to let him sit and heal, you may as well limit his time playing in the game. Probably should drop Miggy to the 5 spot as well.

        It’s definitely a must-win for the Tiger’s (obviously)

  2. butchhuskey - Oct 8, 2013 at 2:35 PM

Must-win for the A’s today. There’s no way they want to see a Scherzer-Verlander combo in game 5.

    • scatterbrian - Oct 8, 2013 at 2:52 PM

      No, it’s a must-win for Detroit today

    • APBA Guy - Oct 8, 2013 at 5:01 PM

Guys, I’m 0-4 in the prediction dept in the last 4 games the A’s have had with Detroit.

In those 4 games the A’s are 3-1.

      Let’s Go Oakland!

  3. cabrera24 - Oct 8, 2013 at 4:19 PM

I totally agree , bench Iglesias and bring him in for defense late in the game .
This is obviously a must win for Detroit .
I think if Detroit wins today this series is pretty much over with Max going for game5

    • historiophiliac - Oct 8, 2013 at 4:54 PM

Not if our bats don’t get hot. V was great, but we didn’t score.

      • APBA Guy - Oct 8, 2013 at 5:04 PM

Are you feeling optimistic, Historio? I’m a little nervous…and coincidentally, our server at work just went down and the IT guy has that “concerned” look on his face. Five more minutes and I can officially work from home, in front of my TV.

      • historiophiliac - Oct 8, 2013 at 5:06 PM

I am very nervous and not optimistic. Relatedly, yesterday, I was stuck at a work station without speakers. I had the video up. I sent an email to one of our IT guys, and bless him, he knew the emergency immediately. He scrounged a spare pair so I could hear the game. Everyone in my office has their fingers crossed, so I won’t be mopey tomorrow.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 8, 2013 at 5:07 PM

In Dog we trust. I see a big offensive explosion for the Tiggers today.

      • historiophiliac - Oct 8, 2013 at 5:08 PM

God, I hope so. Or, you might be scraping me up off the floor. If I go silent, you know I’m in grieving. :(

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 8, 2013 at 5:08 PM

I feel like I can hear them ticking.

      • historiophiliac - Oct 8, 2013 at 5:14 PM

        I’m a mess right now.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 8, 2013 at 5:16 PM

        I suggest you start drinking.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 8, 2013 at 5:22 PM

Tough first inning for Dog – consistently up in the zone – he can’t live there.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 8, 2013 at 6:35 PM

        Bhoom!

      • historiophiliac - Oct 8, 2013 at 8:41 PM

        he he!

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 8, 2013 at 8:42 PM

I’m happy for you – also for more baseball.

      • historiophiliac - Oct 8, 2013 at 8:43 PM

I think I aged like 20 years there. I’m worn out. lol

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 8, 2013 at 8:47 PM

        I bet you’re tired – ha.

Game 5′s are cool – not that I want one for the Sawks or anything – but they’re fun.

      • historiophiliac - Oct 8, 2013 at 8:51 PM

Damn His Heterochromianess is good. I think I’ll have a victory beer…on a work night. lol

        Go, Floating Carpets! he he

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 8, 2013 at 8:52 PM

Yay beer – boo floating carpets

      • historiophiliac - Oct 8, 2013 at 8:53 PM

You just said you like Game 5′s. :D

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 8, 2013 at 8:55 PM

But I clearly qualified that observation. Worried that Hellboy gets power from their devilry tho – can’t lie.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 10, 2013 at 6:01 PM

I do like them – I really do. So … are you flipping out?

      • historiophiliac - Oct 10, 2013 at 7:25 PM

A little nervous. I decided not to wear my cap. Think it’s a good choice. Maybe.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 10, 2013 at 7:26 PM

How do you feel about the starting lineup.

      • historiophiliac - Oct 10, 2013 at 7:31 PM

Pretty okay — except for the token white boy. I think it gives us latitude for changes later. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Iggy come in for Miggy in the bottom of the 8th for a defensive upgrade if we aren’t down. We won’t have much of anything left on the bench. Also, I wouldn’t surprised to see Pena if we’re up and Alex is cold still.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 10, 2013 at 7:34 PM

Interesting – well good luck – I’ll be watching but no premonitions tonight. Hard to know what the A’s will get out of Gray – he’s supposed to be dinged up.

      • historiophiliac - Oct 10, 2013 at 7:37 PM

        Don’t jinx anything!

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 10, 2013 at 8:00 PM

Just reporting the facts – good luck tonight

      • historiophiliac - Oct 10, 2013 at 8:01 PM

        Thank you! Eeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 10, 2013 at 9:43 PM

AJax just set the ALDS whiff record.

      • historiophiliac - Oct 10, 2013 at 9:48 PM

        He’ll snap out of it.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 10, 2013 at 9:50 PM

In spring training. This is him against good pitchers to a large extent.

      • historiophiliac - Oct 10, 2013 at 9:52 PM

I don’t think so. He’s usually good at getting on base. Quit hating!

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 10, 2013 at 9:53 PM

Moss just tied him – this game within a game ain’t over yet.

      • historiophiliac - Oct 10, 2013 at 9:54 PM

I see you’re getting your trolling back. Feeling better?

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 10, 2013 at 10:01 PM

Little by little. Still 5 weeks from partial weight bearing. Watching lots of sports & car overhauling shows. I still got my health & my mojo. Trolling you is good clean dangerous fun.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 10, 2013 at 10:02 PM

Benching Sogard just screwed the A’s

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 10, 2013 at 10:08 PM

Maybe Moss has that extra Wiil To K

      • historiophiliac - Oct 10, 2013 at 10:47 PM

        lol

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 10, 2013 at 10:55 PM

        TW2K!

      • historiophiliac - Oct 10, 2013 at 10:56 PM

        Let’s use that.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 10, 2013 at 10:57 PM

        For sure.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 10, 2013 at 11:07 PM

AJax making the most of his extra PA’s. TW2K is strong in this guy.

      • historiophiliac - Oct 10, 2013 at 11:08 PM

I wonder what’s up with that. Did someone steal his power ring?

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 10, 2013 at 11:20 PM

It was a decoder ring but the message was ‘be sure to drink your ovaltine.’

      • historiophiliac - Oct 10, 2013 at 11:21 PM

How does Dipstick Kelly get so many walks?

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 10, 2013 at 11:22 PM

Jedi mind tricks coupled with not swinging.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 10, 2013 at 11:36 PM

Congrats. Of course you know this means war. :)

      • historiophiliac - Oct 10, 2013 at 11:37 PM

We ain’t afeared of yer homeless!

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 11, 2013 at 12:07 AM

        And so it begins

      • historiophiliac - Oct 11, 2013 at 12:11 AM

        Bring on the beards!

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 12, 2013 at 8:02 PM

I predict zero Tigger wins at Fenway

      • historiophiliac - Oct 12, 2013 at 8:16 PM

        Miggy looks good.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 12, 2013 at 8:19 PM

His IV drip didn’t wear off yet – he always starts better.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 12, 2013 at 8:23 PM

Hard to believe AJax started us off with a whiff. TW2K

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 12, 2013 at 10:55 PM

Alberquerque – so happy to see you

      • historiophiliac - Oct 12, 2013 at 10:57 PM

        I bet you are.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 12, 2013 at 11:22 PM

41% of MLB players voted Cowboy Joe the worst umpire in 2011. So of course he gets the nod in this series. Of fucking course he does.

      • historiophiliac - Oct 12, 2013 at 11:30 PM

I do believe he’s head of the umps union. The good news is, this means Angel gets the WS.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 12, 2013 at 11:31 PM

I’m as angry as the jockey & the Hawaiian.

      • historiophiliac - Oct 12, 2013 at 11:32 PM

What did you name your beard?

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 12, 2013 at 11:34 PM

        Dr. Weird

      • historiophiliac - Oct 12, 2013 at 11:35 PM

        Makes sense.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 12, 2013 at 11:44 PM

Nice to have Kelly in Miggy’s spot. Thank you for over managing Jim Leyland.

      • historiophiliac - Oct 12, 2013 at 11:46 PM

That’s Dan Kelly — didn’t you hear McCarver?

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 12, 2013 at 11:48 PM

I heard him all game defending Cowboy Joe. Like nails on a chalkboard he is.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 13, 2013 at 12:07 AM

        Motherfucker. Fuck Joe West.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 13, 2013 at 12:08 AM

Fuck Fox – Fuck McCarver – Fuck Joe Buck. Especially fuck your steroid cheat.

      • historiophiliac - Oct 13, 2013 at 12:11 AM

        Really?

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 13, 2013 at 12:12 AM

Yep – that about sums it up. Jhonny the jhuicer.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 13, 2013 at 11:47 PM

Keep talking shit about Papi – it’s obviously good karma.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 23, 2013 at 8:59 PM

        Loving Pete Kozma right now.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 26, 2013 at 10:09 PM

Every time I see Seth Maness warm up I think of you because of His Heterochromianess.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 27, 2013 at 10:21 PM

Scherzer’s little bro Seth Maness is coming out for a key moment here.

      • unclemosesgreen - Oct 13, 2013 at 10:05 AM

Why don’t you go back to *not* pretending to give a shit.
