HBT Extra: Joe Posnanski and I talk about whether baseball has cleaned its house of PEDs

Oct 8, 2013, 5:17 PM EDT

Kay Adams, Joe Posnanski and I talk PEDs in baseball. Has MLB turned a corner? When and where will the next PED scandal break?

Very nice take, especially Craig’s remark about the changing culture.

But I’ve never bought the suggestion that the incentives to use PEDs are greatest on the margins. The prospect of a good player becoming an excellent player, or an excellent player becoming a legend, is enormous. If you’re (say) hitting 20 home runs a year and you think you can hit 35 with PEDs, isn’t that an enormous temptation? The rewards, in terms of dollars and glory, are massive.

Honest question: our hostess says this is a ‘special edition.’ Why?

I spy “the New Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract”, “Ball Four”, “Total Baseball”, and the 2013 “Hardball Times” on Craig’s bookshelf.

I spy the cutest sports video personality ever (hint: she’s not one of the bald ones). Clearly the reason any of these count as special.

Yeah, books I’ve actually got! (Well, what year is my total baseball from?) And I remember Craig writing about that great poster behind him…
