Breaking Bad: Phillies edition

Oct 10, 2013, 1:41 PM EDT

The guy who wrote this tweet is after my own heart:

Some background here. Apparently Bryan Cranston is a big Phillies fan. Which makes Walter White both the one who knocks and the one who continues to insist that the Ryan Howard contract was a good one. And that the Phillies are just a move or two away from contending next year. And that their team is somehow better because their fans are more “passionate,” or whatever euphemism is being used that day.

If they had what it takes to get Price, and then signed Ellsbury they could have a good shot but that isn’t happening.

  2. dennisund - Oct 10, 2013 at 1:58 PM

Walt: If I were you, Craig, I would tread lightly.
Craig: haha I’m just messing around.
    Walt: Say my name

  3. DelawarePhilliesFan - Oct 10, 2013 at 1:58 PM

Never seen the show, and while I know “of” it, no clue what it is about. Excpet for some guy who supposdely is bad….and once was a chemistry teacher or something.

    • cohnjusack - Oct 10, 2013 at 3:18 PM

In truth, I’ve never seen the show. Here are my steps to following pop culture trends

      1. Ignore it while it’s on. Assume everyone has terribly taste and don’t watch it.
      2. Become intrigued as it gets more and more attention, including from people’s whose opinion I respect
      3. Still don’t watch it because it’s now in season 4 and I have to go back and that just sounds exhausting.
      4. Watch it 5 years after it went off the year. Realize it’s amazing.
      5. Try to fell my friends how amazing it is. Have friends tell me their not interested in discussing it because everything they had to say about it they said five years ago.
      6. Be lonely. Comment on baseball related sports blog to pass the time.

So you must be just about finished with ‘The Wire’ now, right? Everyone’s still happy to talk about that one.

      • thomas844 - Oct 10, 2013 at 6:22 PM

Speaking of which, did anyone else see the M*A*S*H finale? Wasn’t it amazing?!

      • stlouis1baseball - Oct 11, 2013 at 9:02 AM

Wow…we have more in common than I thought Cusack.
I can relate to all (6).

      • 4cornersfan - Oct 11, 2013 at 6:56 PM

I hear you. I live in Albuquerque and never watched the show. Saw them filming around town though, does that count?

  4. jmcnick - Oct 10, 2013 at 1:59 PM

Craig. Thanks, now go back to your parents basement.

  5. szapata03 - Oct 10, 2013 at 2:10 PM

What does Bryan Cranston have in common with Ruben Amaro?

-They’re both already looking for new jobs.

    Amaro = Bum

    • aceshigh11 - Oct 10, 2013 at 3:16 PM

Actually, Cranston has been steadily acting in film even while Breaking Bad was on the air, and he’s obviously now more in demand than ever.

      He’ll be just fine.

  6. cabrera24 - Oct 10, 2013 at 2:19 PM

I’m a die hard phillies fan , go to their games at least 10-15 times a year .
If I was in control of the GM spot I would get rid of so many players and coaches . Starting with Rollins , Howard , Ruf, Mayberry , Martinez , they have a lot of crappy ball players I can go on and on …

Go send a scout to Dominican Republic scout some good young players for once .
Or Venezuela , or CUBA .
Maikel Franco the next phillies superstar coming soon !

    • Francisco (FC) - Oct 10, 2013 at 2:25 PM

Memo: Martinez is no longer on the 40 man Roster.

      • phillphan - Oct 10, 2013 at 2:29 PM

It could be worse to be a phillies fan. They could have Fredi Gonzalez as their coach. Ain’t that right,Craig?

    • ryanhowardsnose - Oct 10, 2013 at 2:34 PM

Can’t just “get rid” of Rollins with those 10/5 rights he’s got… Ruf is a good young right handed power bat, hopefully you’re not lumping him in with the “crappy ball players” that seem to plague your favorite team.

  7. cabrera24 - Oct 10, 2013 at 2:26 PM

John Mayberry wouldn’t have gotten ANY playing time in no other team so he’s career is likely over if the phillies let him go . Utley by far my favorite phillie besides hamels , i would’ve traded him along with Rollins . It’s easier said then done but if you want to compete with the braves young core and the nats and the mets future you have to start over . Amarao your the worst .

    • ryanhowardsnose - Oct 10, 2013 at 2:36 PM

Again, Rollins has a no-trade clause due to his service in MLB and with the Phillies organization. He wants to stay put to compete for the top spot in several of the franchise’s statistical categories.

  8. phillphan - Oct 10, 2013 at 2:27 PM

It could be worse to be a phillies fan. They could have Fredi Gonzalez as their coach. Ain’t that right,Craig?

  9. cabrera24 - Oct 10, 2013 at 2:27 PM

Yea I know , he was designated not too long ago but why wait until end of the season ? He’s a scrub . He can’t hit a coconut .

  10. mdpickles - Oct 10, 2013 at 2:28 PM

Craig, enough with the philly obsession already!

  11. cabrera24 - Oct 10, 2013 at 2:32 PM

They get rid of delmon young to acquired who ? No one . Who filled in for him ? Casper wells …

  12. cabrera24 - Oct 10, 2013 at 2:44 PM

Can you agree with me that the phillies need a complete make over ?

And I don’t think Ruf will reach the 20 HR mark next season . Maybe he will if he gets the playing time . But there’s talks about them looking for an everyday Corner outfield so who knows .. Do you prefer pure complete hitter or just a ” power bat ” ?

    • NJgriffNC - Oct 10, 2013 at 3:03 PM

I prefer a complete hitter. Ideally have high OBP guys at the top of the order, and have good averages below. Hits with RISP is, in my opinion, the most significant stat that correlates with wins. Look at the Cardinals. Outstanding numbers with RISP the past few seasons. I’m really excited for Franco and for the new wave to take over. Hopefully Morgan and Biddle will impress as well.

  13. cabrera24 - Oct 10, 2013 at 2:46 PM

Yea I know that . I’m aware about the stat situation … Guess we going have to wait couple more years ..

    • aceshigh11 - Oct 10, 2013 at 3:23 PM

      Dude…one post.

*ONE* post to get your point out, then stop unless it’s to respond to a commenter.

  15. faccda01 - Oct 10, 2013 at 3:20 PM

Craig is just in a bad mood cause the Braves choked for the millionth time. I don’t know of any Phillies fan that thinks Howard’s contract is good. When you hate so much Craig, at least make it somewhat believable.

  16. cabrera24 - Oct 10, 2013 at 3:33 PM

Yes sir . But like I said earlier they need to send scouts to the Caribbean’s dude . That’s where is at ! To curaçao , Cuba , Venezuela etc etc . Biddle and Franco I can’t wait for their call up

  17. mattlukethompson - Oct 10, 2013 at 4:16 PM

This is a load of poop, Cranston is a Dodgers fan.

    • schmedley69 - Oct 10, 2013 at 7:46 PM

According to his Wikipedia page, he is both a Phillies and Dodgers fan:

“Cranston played baseball when he was a student,[4] and remains a collector of baseball memorabilia and avid fan of the Philadelphia Phillies and the Los Angeles Dodgers.”

      • stlouis1baseball - Oct 11, 2013 at 9:09 AM

I know am less of a Brian Cranston fan. He likes the Phillies AND the Dodgers?
Seriously? Before anyone jumps on me. You can very much be a fan of the game of Baseball itself and like and/or follow several teams and players. But to be a fan of two teams (in the same league no less) is something I have never been able to get my head wrapped around.
Yeah…I am a Cardinals fan. But I sure like those Colorado Rockies!

        What the hell?

  18. flyinhighwithvick - Oct 10, 2013 at 4:48 PM

Seriously Craig, grow up. Youre such a child. But then again, I’d be a little pissy too after yet another October choke job.

  19. sisqsage - Oct 10, 2013 at 5:07 PM

See what happens when you don’t pay chemistry teachers enough.

  20. rolleagles - Oct 10, 2013 at 5:28 PM

Unnecessary Phillies post where Craig Calcaterra takes shots at the Phillies, but fails to realize that posts like this make him even more unlikable.

So the Braves lose and you feel the need to make garbage posts about the Phillies?

  21. clemente2 - Oct 10, 2013 at 5:52 PM

Do all Phillies phans have no sense of humor, or just enough to fill these comments? Joking, people, he’s joshing you.

    • dennisund - Oct 10, 2013 at 7:37 PM

I’m a Phillies fan and I made a joke. How do you know which jokes are made by which teams’ fans?

    • flyinhighwithvick - Oct 10, 2013 at 7:51 PM

      You’re obviously new here.

  22. octom - Oct 10, 2013 at 6:14 PM

B J Upton & Dan Uggla – two good contracts.

  23. weaselpuppy - Oct 10, 2013 at 6:27 PM

Amaro better call the Vacuum Repair Guy

  24. smittyavcm - Oct 11, 2013 at 9:10 AM

I am stunned that Phillies fans are saying Ruf is crappy he has .776 OPS hit 12 home runs in the second half as a platoon player glad you guys aren’t the GM. His fielding skills are so so but when Franco comes up there will be a logjam on this team…..
