At least one person really, really likes Joe West

Oct 11, 2013, 2:48 PM EDT

MLB announcing that Joe West will be the crew chief for the ALCS was met with a lot of mockery in various places this morning, but Dallas Morning News writer Gerry Fraley is sticking up for Cowboy Joe on Twitter:

The first detractor’s name is Chris West. Can we check to see if even Country Joe West’s son/nephew can’t stand him as an umpire?

    • El Bravo - Oct 11, 2013 at 3:51 PM

That’s cowboy joe to you, sir.

  2. dcfan4life - Oct 11, 2013 at 2:53 PM

Jerry Fraley doesn’t actually WATCH MLB does he…?

    • historiophiliac - Oct 11, 2013 at 3:18 PM

      Baseball Town!

      • bendover09 - Oct 11, 2013 at 5:06 PM

Texas/Cali produce the most MLB athletes so not sure what you are getting at ?? Other than the ‘a’ & ‘t’ … Ppl from Dallas do not stick up for Joe bc I am one of them. He dislikes the rangers so I dislike him

  3. shawndc04 - Oct 11, 2013 at 2:57 PM

Actually, Joe is a good balls and strikes umpire. It’s when he gets out of that element that the problems begin.

  4. phantomspaceman - Oct 11, 2013 at 3:07 PM

    He’s just trolling, right?

  5. chiadam - Oct 11, 2013 at 3:10 PM

    J as in “Joe West”
O as in “Oh my God, it’s Joe West”
E as in “Everyone look, it’s Joe West”

W as in “We sure are lucky that Joe West is here”
E as in “Excitement, thy name is Joe West”
S as in “Say, is that Joe West”
T as in “Today, I bought Joe West’s album”

    • eglooney - Oct 12, 2013 at 7:55 PM

Space … Isn’t that what you DON’T get when Cowboy Joe gets in your face?

Or, is that what you get AFTER you get sent off by the West… as in lots?

I don’t think anyone ever told Joe that the umpire’s job is to arbiter differences between the opinions of the two teams, not establish a difference in how the game is going. And, I don’t think anyone ever told him the game is about the players – not the umpires.

Joe West, almost as good as Leslie Nielsen behind the plate!

  7. realitypolice - Oct 11, 2013 at 3:30 PM

It pains me to say this, but he is actually a very good umpire. Too bad he has act like a thin skinned jackass all the time.

    • NatsLady - Oct 11, 2013 at 3:46 PM

I’ve heard the same, good strike zone, good calls.

      • deaninajijic - Oct 11, 2013 at 4:11 PM

If that’s what you hear, then you need to watch.

  8. stex52 - Oct 11, 2013 at 3:36 PM

Hey, some people like liver and onions, too. It takes all types.

But I will take liver and onions over Angel Hernandez.

    • eglooney - Oct 12, 2013 at 7:57 PM

I’d take Don Notts over No-Angel Hernandez.

Hell, I’d take Steve “I hate the Rangers and don’t mind sticking it to them” Palermo over Asshat Hernandez.

Who the hell is Jerry Fraley and has he watched a CJW Umpired game this season? Last season? The season before that? ANY season or game in which CJW has been an umpire?

Look, while this “Jerry Fraley” (is that a REAL name, or just a “twitterhandle”? Looks fake to me) remains on crack we have to ignore whatever he says. This man is on some bad shit. Hell be eating faces on twitter next.

    • nbjays - Oct 11, 2013 at 4:19 PM

      I hear ya, Cur.

Joe West is such a good umpire that Bob Davidson, CB Bucknor and Angel Hernandez all said “I want to be just like that guy”

    • rbj1 - Oct 11, 2013 at 4:35 PM

      It’s actually Joe West’s mom.

    • 4cornersfan - Oct 11, 2013 at 7:01 PM

I don’t know who Jerry Fraley is, but if you want to see his mug shot go to

  10. deaninajijic - Oct 11, 2013 at 4:10 PM

Joe west may not be the worst MLB umpire but he’s close. Last nights Tiger-A’s game was a perfect example of what we see almost every game. Even the announcers couldn’t believe some of the calls. The idea that a bad strike call doesn’t effect the hitter or the game is ludicrous. A beatter who just got a pitch 6 inches off the plate called a strike to make the count 1-2 instead of 2-1 is in trouble for two reasons- A) he’s got to swing at the next pitch off the plate, so he doesn’t get called out, and B) the picture can now throw something in the dirt and away because he doesn’t have to worry about getting to 3-1.
Some calls went for the A’s but Verlander was getting pitches out of the zone way too often. They need to retire or retrain most of these guys!

    • moogro - Oct 11, 2013 at 5:30 PM

All hail being in the midst of the endless era of watching the truth side-by-side with human umpiring. It’s performance art!

  11. eagles512 - Oct 11, 2013 at 4:14 PM

He should have been fired a long time ago

  12. tfbuckfutter - Oct 11, 2013 at 4:30 PM

Pretty sure he thinks Joe is Kanye’s son’s name.

  13. drelms - Oct 11, 2013 at 8:09 PM

I hear that MLB reviews all games and gives the umpires a scorecard on the way they call the games. Someone has to sue the MLB to get access to these records because if any of the methods that some stations use to track the pitch location (such as pitchtrax), on the plate are correct, the strikes some of these umpires have called are simply ridiculous to say the least.

    • eglooney - Oct 12, 2013 at 8:00 PM

It’s my understanding the teams involved in each game send a scorecard into the ML Offices… if that’s the case, I don’t understand why some of these guys aren’t given zeroes by the teams they screw.
