Gerry Davis to lead NLCS umpiring crew, Joe West to lead the ALCS crew

Oct 11, 2013, 12:31 PM EST

Joe West AP

Meritocracy in action: Joe West is the crew chief for the ALCS.  His team will consist of Dale Scott, Rob Drake, Dan Iassogna, Ron Kulpa and Alfonso Marquez.  Gerry Davis will be the NLCS crew chief. His men in blue: Ted Barrett, Mark Carlson, Bruce Dreckman, Mike Everitt and Greg Gibson.

Actually, mostly good crews as far as my memory serves. I’m no West fan, but most of our usual ump-show umps are not present on the Championship Series rosters.

But, man, West.

Good heat maps of all of the ump strike zones over on fangraphs…

    • gloccamorra - Oct 11, 2013 at 2:00 PM

They actually have strike zones? They have actual patterns that aren’t random? It just looks to me like they’re guessing most of the time.

West v Leyland: coming to a TV set soon

This should be good, eh? Skinny Guy vs Fat Guy. A battle out of legend and myth. Who will emerge victorious? Skinny lil Jim Leyland vs the Le Behemoth of MLB: Cowboy Joe West (CJW). Leyland will get tossed, the only questions are how many times and for what.
Why is/are this/these tossing(s) a certainty? Nothing to do with Leyland, really. He’s like a lot of guys in his position: not at home to fools. CJW will be in his element. In a position to screw up an easy call and act like he couldn’t possibly have got it wrong. Possibly a balk. Maybe a called safe on an out at first? Both of them? Or, deliciously, a scene involving BOTH managers in turn attacking CBJ and getting the Heave-Ho. Who knows what it’ll be. All that we know is that it will be damn good theatre.

      • historiophiliac - Oct 11, 2013 at 2:36 PM

West has a thing for tossing Leyland and Verlander. Sigh.

      • historiophiliac - Oct 11, 2013 at 2:39 PM

        /smacks book against forehead

      • ptfu - Oct 11, 2013 at 4:12 PM

Can Leyland tweak his rotation so Verlander pitches when the Cowboy isn’t behind the plate? That’s gotta be worth an extra day of rest.

  6. racksie - Oct 11, 2013 at 12:58 PM

Leland may get tossed. Cowboy Joe West? Yikes.

I’m just thankful he’s not doing the National Anthem.

    • 18thstreet - Oct 11, 2013 at 1:23 PM

Direct your anger at MLB. We all know who Joe West is, and we all know what’s coming.

  8. moogro - Oct 11, 2013 at 1:36 PM

The equivalent of Tony Soprano screwing up a job better handled by a more able lieutenant, deflecting all criticism, and then assigning himself because he is the Boss to go out again on a job that’s over his head, simply because he wants to. Pay off or threaten MLB to maintain this arrangement forever. And when pitch f/x and HD replay seem to undermine this relationship, force a silly challenge system onto the game that foregrounds umpires, rather than backgrounds them with a fifth man in the video booth.

An extortionist cabal. The human element.

Well at least Joe won’t be working the World Series….just hoping that CB and Angel are not on the Series.

    • raynman49 - Oct 11, 2013 at 2:47 PM

      AMEN brother!

  11. gloccamorra - Oct 11, 2013 at 2:13 PM

Wait – are they using that umpire from a couple years ago who signaled a foul ball, freezing the runners at first and second, and then let the Dodgers complete a triple play against the Padres, and then tossed Padres manager Bud Black before he could protest the game?

  12. realitypolice - Oct 11, 2013 at 3:33 PM

Like I said on the other West post, Joe West is actually a very good umpire who would probably be considered one of the best if he wasn’t such a thin skinned jackass and realized that no one paid or tuned in to see him in action.
