NLCS, Game 1: Dodgers-Cardinals lineups

Oct 11, 2013, 5:17 PM EDT

Lineups for Game 1 in St. Louis …

LF Carl Crawford
2B Mark Ellis
SS Hanley Ramirez
1B Adrian Gonzalez
RF Yasiel Puig
3B Juan Uribe
CF Andre Ethier
C A.J. Ellis
SP Zack Greinke

Andre Ethier was limited to pinch-hitting duties in the NLDS and hasn’t started a game since aggravating a leg injury on September 13, but he’s in the Dodgers’ lineup tonight … and playing center field.

2B Matt Carpenter
RF Carlos Beltran
LF Matt Holliday
1B Matt Adams
C Yadier Molina
CF Jon Jay
3B David Freese
SS Pete Kozma
SP Joe Kelly

Cardinals manager Mike Matheny is going with his standard lineup, which includes Matt Adams in the cleanup spot for the still-sidelined Allen Craig and Pete Kozma at shortstop.

I believe Kozma is in the line-up again, because the Cards bench is weakened by the Craig absence, and Descalso is the best left-handed pinch hitter the Cards have as an option.

I believe Kozma is in the line-up again, because his defense has been outstanding, and he is batting .400 this postseason so far.

He has been remarkably solid defensively this year. Point taken. However, PL aside, Descalso isn’t awful at SS, even though he struggled until the final month. But to suggest his .400 BA is the reason he is playing ignores the rest of the season, the fact that he is right-handed, and uses an enormously small sample size to support your position.

I hope you are correct and he can continue to produce in the post-season.

Yes, Descalso is awful at SS. He’s horrible. I honestly have no idea how you can watch Cardinal games and not realize how bad his range is, how horrible he is at coming in on the ball, and how many errors he makes (those that are both counted as errors and those that are not)….and it isn’t just me. Kozma is like having 2 pitchers in the lineup, but the Cardinals run him out there anyway because he’s the only one on the team that can play a passable SS.

Having Freese and Descalso on the left side of the IF together is like hanging a giant sign that says “Hit It Here”.

I still say he isn’t as bad as you make him out to be, and you cannot deny he has played better there in the past couple of weeks. We disagree, fine. I was a middle infielder in the Cards organization for 3 years, so there is that.

But, the reason Kozma is in vs. the rightie Greinke is because of our bench weakness against righties.

Spud, the Cards have been looking for a shortstop all season and you’ve just been hanging out at HBT? Get in there, dude! Suit up!

I’m 62, with a knee replacement, a rebuilt shoulder, and sotted by alcohol. Better stick to Kozma and Descalso.
