Will the Cardinals replace the injured David Freese?

David Freese left last night’s game with a calf injury and Rick Hummel of the St. Louis Post Dispatch writes that the Cardinals third baseman may be unavailable for Game 4 tonight.

Freese and general manager John Mozeliak expressed optimism that the injury isn’t a major one, but will the Cardinals want to play with a 24-man roster for the remainder of the NLCS? They could replace Freese on the roster, but doing so would make him ineligible for the World Series.

Obviously any team would rather play with a 24-man roster for 3-4 games than play a World Series without a key regular, but even if Freese’s injury were a standard two-week, disabled list-stint variety he’d miss most of the World Series anyway. At the very least Daniel Descalso seems likely to be in the lineup at third base against the Dodgers tonight.

The question is who they replace him with. Their bench is awful. The guys from the 40-man who didn’t make the postseason roster are actually worse if that’s possible. Tons and tons of pitching depth. Nothing short of barren everywhere else.

Yep. The way Matheny has been mesmerized by the enchantress of lefty-righty match-ups makes an empty roster spot more valuable than whoever they could come up with to replace Freese.

Yeah…this really puts a damper on his sudden penchant for batting Yadier in the clean up spot. I mean…now he simply can’t hit him in the 5 hole. Right? Gotta’ be a lefty, righty, lefty, righty…I am going to shoot myself if Yadier Molina hits clean up again…right?

I thought you already shot yourself because of Yadi in the clean up spot….I hope you take advantage of any self-induced gunshot advantage that may (or may not) exist by switching from your left to right hands as appropriate.

Adams has to do something against the lefthanders. Who is else is going to bat 4th?

“The guys from the 40-man who didn’t make the postseason roster are actually worse if that’s possible.”

If that’s possible? Usually that is the case, that is why they didn’t make the roster in the first place.

Under normal circumstances I agree, but their bench right now is Adron Chambers, Shane Robinson, Descalso/Kozma (whoever doesn’t start), Kolten Wong (who I think will eventually hit, just not this year) and Tony Cruz.

My guess – and it’s only a guess – is that if Freese doesn’t play, they’ll just put in Descalso. In a way (even though Carpenter has played 2B all year) I’d rather they moved Carpenter to 3B and play Wong. Carpenter came up as a 3B so it’s not like it’s foreign to him, and then with Descalso on the bench they’d have a sub they can stick in defensively anywhere.

But yeah, none of those guys I mentioned at the top of this post can hit a lick. So that’s why I say if it’s possible.

Who else do they have? Is there a rocking 3B with a Cardinals jersey sitting at home somewhere?

Is Craig ready to come back? Can he play third, or free up someone else who could play third?

    • bfunk1978 - Oct 15, 2013 at 10:25 AM

Craig has played a handful of games at 3B according to bbref but man, with that foot/ankle injury he’s coming off of that’d be tempting some serious fate.

And if Craig were able to play 1B and they tried to move Adams to 3B I think you’d be better off just fielding 8 guys, because then they’re not fooling themselves into thinking Adams could get to a hot ground ball.

    George Brett?

    Pujols can play third…oh wait.

    • bfunk1978 - Oct 15, 2013 at 10:59 AM

That doesn’t even make sense. I know it’s a dig at the Cardinals for letting him leave, but let’s also tack on the fact that he ended the year on the DL. All things considered, including how good Craig was until he got hurt, and how good Adams has been him not being there is the best thing.

      • blues1988 - Oct 15, 2013 at 11:13 AM

You dig at the cardinals for letting him go? lets see by not paying him 250 million dollars the cards signed wainwright for 5 years, molina for 5 years, and craig for 5 years, oh and we got michael wacha as a compensation pick. anyone who still thinks that was a bad move is an idiot. oh and like you said, he was hurt all year and his career is steadily on the decline.

      • bfunk1978 - Oct 15, 2013 at 11:16 AM

Oh, no, for sure you didn’t read my comment or you replied to the wrong guy. Pujols being gone is the best thing. That was my conclusion. I keep forgetting that literacy is hard.

    • stlouis1baseball - Oct 15, 2013 at 12:07 PM

Pujols may be able to “coach” third for his son’s fall ball team. But he damn sure isn’t playing the position.

ah yeah, my bad i totally read that wrong!
