Jose Iglesias made an absolutely ridiculous catch last night

Oct 18, 2013, 9:50 AM EDT

Everyone was talking about it when it happened in the third inning, but in case you weren’t watching, check out what Jose Iglesias did on a popup by David Ortiz:

Just insane.

Of course a couple of innings later Ortiz hit another popup but this time it got behind Iglesias and Ortiz had a hit. Ortiz’s quote after that:

“That’s the payback,” Ortiz said. “Payback is a beeeeeyotch!”

I dunno. I think you still owe some to Iglesias all the same.

    Great play. Loved it.

Summed up the ceiling of Iglesias.

Damn, I sure hope Jake Peavy makes this trade worth it…

Iglesias has a .654 ops since the trade (and a .622 OPS in the minors), and noboby’s glove can make up for that. But he is still a blast to watch.

Iglesias has a .654 ops since the trade (and a .622 OPS in the minors), and noboby’s glove can make up for that

        Ozzie Smith – .666 OPS (87OPS+)

Not saying Iglesias = Smith, a .654 isn’t the death knell for an amazing glove SS.

There are position at which a glove can make up for a mid-600s OPS, and an elite defensive SS is one of them. An elite defensive SS can take away a LOT of hits that an average SS can not over the coarse of a year, and often that difference is far larger than the difference in offensive production.

Yeah, Iglesias’ bat will make the trade worth it.

    • hockeyflow33 - Oct 18, 2013 at 1:37 PM

They’re one win away from making it worth it

    • jcmeyer10 - Oct 18, 2013 at 3:29 PM

He already has. The Red Sox are playing games 6 and 7 at home.

Craig, Ortiz did show his respect by flashing that smile after the play. The look said it all.

    • sabatimus - Oct 18, 2013 at 11:01 AM

That, and Ortiz also clapped on his way to the dugout.

      • jcmeyer10 - Oct 18, 2013 at 3:28 PM

I felt like that was more of a frustration clap but am open to interpretation.

Also, can we give some love to that Lester play?

  5. jm91rs - Oct 18, 2013 at 10:36 AM

I loved the swipe. A lot of guys could run that fast and far, but to just throw his glove at it like that and hold on…awesome play. Papi hit two balls that way last night, yet they still continue the shift.

Meanwhile, did anybody see what Brayan was trying to do tagging the umpire at 3rd base? Man should have twisted left NOT right!
