Allen Craig — who has been sidelined since early September with a Lisfranc injury — is hoping to be available as a DH and pinch-hitter for the Cardinals in their World Series matchup with the Red Sox. Craig went through a workout on Friday morning at Busch Stadium in St. Louis and reported feeling fine.

He was back at it again on Sunday afternoon.

A collection of tweets from various baseball beat writers who were on the scene Sunday at Busch:

It’s apparent that Craig is not going to be close to 100 percent health, but even at 80 percent he’d be of big help to a Cardinals team that lacked depth on the bench in the NLDS and NLCS. Craig is a .306/.358/.492 hitter in 372 career major league games. He’s a .394/.451/.636 hitter with runners in scoring position.

It doesn’t really matter who’s on their bench does it?

Tony Cruz, Kolten Wong, Daniel Descalso, Adron Chambers, Shane Robinson/Jon Jay.

It’s a pretty awful bench, and they need a DH.

        Cruz, Wong and Chambers….

….60% of their bench posted a worse batting average than Adam Wainwright.

A friend of mine suggested that Wainwright should DH for himself. The scary thing is…it made sense.

Hey now shugga shane has done pretty well. A healthy Craig is the best option

Bench won’t be needed in Boston, cardinals don’t pinch run that much and no pitcher spot , Craig will DH. Same bench all year shouldn’t be a problem now.

It gets less and less attention as each year passes and the legend David Freese’s WS performance grows…but damn, if Allen Craig didn’t have a hell of a series. In 19 at bats, he hit 3 home runs, drove in 5, hit .263/.417/.737, had the pinch-hit game winning hit in game 1, had the pinch-hit go-head hit in game 2 and robbed Nelson Cruz of a home run.

If Allen Craig can’t really do it, then we can use the DH slot to improve defense. Shane Robinson could play outfield to improve the range over Carlos or Matt. Or Freese could DH with Descalso (or perhaps Wong) in the infield. But it certainly would be reassuring if Craig can play.
