Handicapping the Cubs’ managerial candidates

The job isn’t as sexy as the openings in Washington and Detroit, but the Cubs manager job is up for grabs and today Dave Kaplan of handicaps some of the candidates with the help of an anonymous former GM who adds his thoughts.

Upshot, if you believe the GM views the world the same way Jed Hoyer and Theo Epstein do: sell short on A.J. Hinch, go long on Dave Martinez or Brad Ausmus.

I feel the same way about Ausmus, for what it’s worth. Seems like this would be a great job for a guy who many feel will one day be a fantastic manager but who just needs to cut his teeth a bit.

How high would have Sandberg been on the list if other things had not happened in Philly…..

I don’t think he would have been on the list. The reason he left the Cubs for the Phillies in the first place was because Epstein/Hoyer told him he wasn’t getting the job when they were last looking for a manager.

People change their minds in different situations

Sure, but Sandberg has the reputation of an “old school” manager, and obviously that’s not what the current Cubs regime is based off of, so I think there is very little chance he would have even been interviewed.

Sandberg is a Cubs hero no doubt, but as Hackerjay posted, he wasn’t a option in last mgr search, nor is it now as he is Phillies manager. Also if he were, he would be impossible to fire because Cub fans would see him thru rose colored glasses.

Bet on the ivy league candidate – Ausmus.

ESPN is saying the Cubs will give it to Rick Renteria!

The journalistic wizards over at ESPN also think that perhaps the Cubs should consider hiring Tim Tebow for their managerial vacancy.

I would have thought being the Cubs’ manager was handicap enough.

look at what chicago did to ditka and how they treat him for winning the super bowl? any manager that can help win a world series will go down in lore and be immortalized. with the planned renovations and the new ordinances with the city allowing more night games among other things, i’d say this job is definitely “sexy” just by looking at their current farm system. i always felt sveum was a stepping stone more or less to get through these past two years. he really was in a lose/lose position, but he knew what he was signing up for.
