Carlos Beltran robs David Ortiz of a grand slam but then departs World Series Game 1 with a rib contusion

Oct 23, 2013, 9:20 PM EDT

Boston leads Game 1 of the World Series 5-0 after just two innings, but it could have been even worse for the visiting Cardinals. Watch as St. Louis right fielder Carlos Beltran robs Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz of a grand slam with one out in the bottom of the second (courtesy of HBT’s own Bill Baer):

The craziest thing about that home run-robbing catch is that Beltran’s elbow and torso hit the right-field wall well before the ball even fell. The 36-year-old was apparently injured on impact, as Jon Jay entered to play center field and Shane Robinson slid over to right field to open the bottom of the third inning.

The man on third base — David Ross — of course scored easily, giving the Red Sox their fifth run.

UPDATE, 9:22 p.m. ET: According to the Cardinals’ official Twitter feed, Beltran has a rib contusion.

UPDATE, 10:26 p.m. ET: Beltran has been taken to a local hospital in Boston to undergo tests.

Get well Beltran, Go Red Sox

    • micktaco - Oct 24, 2013 at 1:51 AM

Beltran has 1 more world series at bat then we will ever have. Also fame, popularity and a fortune of $161 million in career salary not including playoff shares & future salaries easily get him to $200 million. Do you feel bad for him now? Not me!

      Karma, karma karma karma khameleon….

Karma is a b, and the cards will are now getting what they deserve. it was all fun and games when the cards were beaming hanley ramirez in game 1 of the nlcs which fractured one of hanley’s ribs.

The cards will now be swept into the garbage where they belong.

goodbye fools! i’m going to Disneyland!!

good catch but not a great catch

    • happytwinsfan - Oct 23, 2013 at 10:03 PM

the catch shane robertson just made in the fifth is better

    • polegojim - Oct 24, 2013 at 8:51 AM

      SERIOUSLY??? You’re both joking right???

Anytime you save a grand slam or a home run… its a HUGE catch.

That’s the same catch that Hunter SHOULD have made for the Tigers… but he over ran the ball. It would be a TOTALLY different World Series if he had made the catch…

I hope he’s not hurt. I love watching this guy, and love that he’s finally here; even as a Sox fan. Not to mention, to be the best, you want to beat the best, and it just wouldn’t feel the same if we won without him in the Cards lineup. Kind of like it would deserve an exclamation point in the history books.

Karma for throwing at Hanley’s ribs in NLCS?

    • stex52 - Oct 23, 2013 at 9:57 PM

      Any cheese with that whine?

      • Anoesis - Oct 23, 2013 at 10:40 PM

The cheese is scoreless in Boston.

Yeah, not to be a dick, but I remember Cardinals fans on here saying Hanley’s rib injury in G1 was insignificant to the overall series.

    • cohnjusack - Oct 23, 2013 at 9:44 PM

Well, I have a feeling Beltran’s injury is going to be pretty insignificant to this game. Maybe it’s the 5-0 lead…

      • peterjohnjoseph - Oct 23, 2013 at 9:58 PM

Why? Sox were losing 5-0 in Game 2 of the ALCS until Beltrans counterpart, Ortiz got up the plate and knocked in a Grand Slam in the 8th inning. I’d say any loss can be significant until the last out.

  6. jwbiii - Oct 23, 2013 at 9:44 PM

The radio broadcast said Beltran has been taken to a hospital. Not good news.

    • cohnjusack - Oct 23, 2013 at 9:45 PM

That would be a massive bummer to have all these stories about his 1st World Series only to get hurt in the 2nd inning and miss it. :(

    OMG what a moron

Stop with Beltran. He has a history of being soft. Go ask the Giants and Mets.— Chris Mad Dog Russo (@MadDogUnleashed) October 24, 2013

Any dickhead who calls himself ‘mad dog’ isn’t a mad dog, he’s a douche.
