Change of plans: Allen Craig and his injured foot are in the Cardinals lineup

How desperate are the Cardinals for some offense tonight against left-hander Jon Lester?

Before the game Allen Craig tested his injured foot in the hopes of playing first base, but it went poorly enough that manager Mike Matheny posted a lineup card with Craig on the bench and Matt Adams starting.

And then less than two hours later Matheny announced a change to that lineup, with Craig starting and Adams going to the bench.

It’ll be interesting to see if the Red Sox make any adjustments defensively when Craig is at the plate knowing that he’s basically limited to a single on any ball not hit over the fence. And of course knowing how baseball tends to work he’ll get multiple chances to show off his range (or lack thereof) on defensive plays at first base.

    Good ole corticosteroids

Sounds like a night of bunting and intentional walk for Boston. Make him run the bases. Get him out of the series completely.

Yes, please increase the likelihood of him getting on base from 37% of the time to 100% of the time. Pleeeease do this!

      Signed,

      A Cardinals fan.

Doesn’t this look panicky to everyone? It’s “Cabrera, the Sequel,” right? For many weeks the Cards showed that they could win without Craig…playing a crippled player when you have a capable replacement seems like a needless gamble.

Matt Adams may not be as “capable” as Craig at this point, especially against the lefty Lester.

Lots of speculation (originally mentioned by Harold Reynolds and now a major point of discussion within the STL media) that Adams surgically repaired elbow is acting up and may require another procedure.

I don’t see this as desperation or panicky at all. Craig has shown the ability to hit with his injured foot. And while the Cards may suffer a little defense, it will only be for a few innings if they get ahead.

Adams against Lester most likely isn’t to produce a lot, and if Craig can perform after his “dash” home the other day, he should be just fine.

Plus having him in the 6 hole allows Matheny to go Lefty/Righty later in the game if Adams is inserted, and with Doubront probably not available, and the confidence of using Breslow at an all-time low, the likelihood of a righty in the late innings is almost a foregone conclusion.

Same way with Jay, replacing Robinson. I think Matheny has gotten this perfectly correct.

Much better than having Gomes in the 4th spot. Wainwright if on, should handle him and if he is lifted for a lefty then the Sox have 3 straight lefties in the middle of the order, and the usage of Siegrist there would be optimal.
