Matt Holliday homers to tie things up in Game 5 vs. Red Sox

We’re all tied up in Game 5 of the World Series.

After the Red Sox grabbed an early lead on an RBI double from David Ortiz in the top of the first inning, the Cardinals evened things up in the bottom of the fourth inning when Matt Holliday took Jon Lester deep for a long solo homer to straight-away center field. He has both home runs for the Cardinals during the series.

Carlos Beltran nearly followed Holliday with a home run of his own, but the ball died near the warning track in left field. Stephen Drew then made a highlight reel jumping catch to rob Yadier Molina of a hit to end the inning. Drew isn’t hitting a lick this postseason, but he’s sure playing a nice shortstop.

The Red Sox and Cardinals are tied 1-1 as Game 5 moves into the top of the fifth inning.

Matheny’s slow hook has been the subject of much discussion over at Fangraphs over the course of this postseason. It’s like the exactly opposite of LaRussa in the 2011 postseason. And it’s something he needs to learn from.

I disagree, Lester has been phenomenal, he’s hardly broken a sweat, very low pitch count. Let your top of the order deal the damage, that’s what they get paid for.

And I would have said even if Ellsbury hadn’t actually produced the hit.

Further observation. You’re already ahead by one, and if the pitcher hits a ground ball there’s no double play threat with 1st base open. If by chance Lester gets a fly ball he might push a run across the plate.

If the situation had been bases loaded and a tie game, then put in a PH.

Just figured keep him lower on the count and possibly save him as a reliever for Wed night. 1 out and runners on 2nd/3rd.
