Cardinals’ charter flight to Boston “significantly delayed” because of mechanical issues

Oct 29, 2013, 6:14 PM EDT

As if dropping two straight World Series home games wasn’t frustrating enough …

Cardinals manager Mike Matheny and Game 6 starter Michael Wacha had to do their scheduled press conferences over the phone. The Red Sox, meanwhile, held a full workout Tuesday afternoon at Fenway Park.

Game 6 of the World Series will be broadcast Wednesday night (8 p.m. ET) on FOX. Boston leads 3-2.

UPDATE, 7:02 p.m. ET: Matt Sebek of JoeSportsFan and RookiesApp fame really nailed this one

The delay is all Mike Matheny’s fault.

It has absolutely nothing to do with the mechanics failing to execute with a plane in takeoff position.

    • okwhitefalcon - Oct 29, 2013 at 7:00 PM

The air traffic controllers are dealing with a clear case of runway obstruction.

It’s unclear if the delay was done on purpose, intent makes no difference.

      The plane will takeoff regardless.

        Run over his butt again!!!!!

    • tfbuckfutter - Oct 29, 2013 at 7:28 PM

That’s weird because I keep reading that St. Louis has the best mechanics in the business.

      • voteforno6 - Oct 29, 2013 at 9:11 PM

I don’t know about that…the airport in St. Louis is one of the worst in the country. I guess its a little too gritty for my taste.

I like the ticket sellers who can’t see over the counter.

      • Old Gator - Oct 29, 2013 at 11:44 PM

Well, at least their plane didn’t have the Chief Wahoo logo just below the cockpit window.

Incidentally, I think that’s one of the old Hooters Air A-380s (the airline with the BIG ONES) that was left for sale cheap after the carrier went out of business.

I saw a few chickens running around and Dorn can’t sleep even with his blackout mask.

  2. jarathen - Oct 29, 2013 at 6:26 PM

It’s like The Amazing Race has infected baseball.

  3. thomas844 - Oct 29, 2013 at 6:42 PM

If the Cardinals lose tomorrow they will probably end up blaming the plane.

  4. kcroyal - Oct 29, 2013 at 6:43 PM

    Even Jesus hates the cardinals.

    • aceshigh11 - Oct 29, 2013 at 7:23 PM

      No, no, no…

If the plane CRASHED, *THEN* we could all say Jesus hates the Cardinals.

At this point, he’s just kinda, y’know, enjoying fuckin’ with them.

      • tfbuckfutter - Oct 29, 2013 at 7:39 PM

Jesus is the guy who attaches the wheels to the plane.

        He’s a Dodgers fan.

    • rbj1 - Oct 29, 2013 at 7:55 PM

      What about Matty and Felipe?

  5. Caught Looking - Oct 29, 2013 at 6:53 PM

A necessary part got picked off the plane prior to departure.

  6. ilovebaxter - Oct 29, 2013 at 6:56 PM

The plane doesn’t work? Thanks a lot Obama

    • tfbuckfutter - Oct 29, 2013 at 8:33 PM

That’s why Stephen Drew isn’t hitting.

He is distracted because he can’t get on Healthcare.gov.

He really needs that pre-existing condition exemption.

  7. toodrunktotastethischicken - Oct 29, 2013 at 7:04 PM

    I suppose something was WONG.

    • 8man - Oct 29, 2013 at 9:10 PM

There may be something wrong with me, but I thought this was pretty funny. Pick off? Take off? I dunno.

  8. fearlessleader - Oct 29, 2013 at 7:10 PM

The “#cardsplaneproblems” hashtag on Twitter is getting pretty amusing, if you need some distraction this afternoon. (E.g., “Other planes were available, but Matheny wanted to remain loyal to the one they’d used all year” and “Cards are adamant they won’t overpay for replacement parts.”)

    • jwbiii - Oct 30, 2013 at 8:33 AM

      I like this one

While delayed, Freese tried hitting on the flight attendant. Surprisingly, he struck out #cardsplaneproblems— Corey Hall (@CoreyHall19) October 29, 2013

    • thomas655 - Oct 30, 2013 at 4:27 PM

The Cards need to get on the Shelby Miller Jumbojet for the last two games.

  9. aceshigh11 - Oct 29, 2013 at 7:24 PM

Hopefully the “mechanical issues” continue with Wacha’s arm tomorrow night.

  10. 18thstreet - Oct 29, 2013 at 7:27 PM

Are we sure they’re not just waiting for Allen Craig?

  11. sandpiperair - Oct 29, 2013 at 7:35 PM

I hear they found a green goopy substance on the landing gear.

  12. themuddychicken - Oct 29, 2013 at 7:37 PM

I can’t even describe how much I love the Middlebrooks picture

  13. junglerat524 - Oct 29, 2013 at 7:44 PM

You sure LaRussa isn’t just changing pitchers again?

  14. jss1330 - Oct 29, 2013 at 7:49 PM

Dave Duncan would have fixed it in under 20 minutes

  15. indaburg - Oct 29, 2013 at 8:14 PM

Maybe they could try this thing?

  16. tfbuckfutter - Oct 29, 2013 at 9:45 PM

I just want to point out….

Stephen Drew has matched his hit total for the four games combined tonight.

    Impressive.

  17. stex52 - Oct 29, 2013 at 10:32 PM

About as witty as I’ve seen us in a while. Good job, guys.

  18. km9000 - Oct 29, 2013 at 11:27 PM

I just want to tell the Cards good luck. We’re all counting on you.

  19. jeremy341a - Oct 30, 2013 at 10:53 AM

Jesus hates the cardinals? Not sure about that but the Math God loves them as proved by these inequalities.
    11>7
    or in a few days
    12>7 or 11>8

Either way seems the Math God favors the Cardinals.

    • jimeejohnson - Oct 30, 2013 at 8:14 PM

There is no math God. There is, however, a social studies God. How else could I have aced that American history regents but barely passed the trig.

  20. mrstephent - Oct 30, 2013 at 11:06 AM

Hey, there’re birds, they can fly to Boston! lol

Hey, I don’t want to hear any wining excuses about the plane trip, from bird fans, when the Redsoxs kicks their behinds tonight, Ok!

All they had to do was buy a 1 way tickets to Boston and fly here like the rest of us human beings on a commercial plane! Their broken down, piece of junk, plane could have flown here the next day.

    • jimeejohnson - Oct 30, 2013 at 8:15 PM

      You could be lying.
