Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star reports that Toronto’s new hitting coach is Kevin Seitzer, who replaces Chad Mottola after the Blue Jays ranked eighth among AL teams in scoring this season.

Seizter was previously the Royals’ hitting coach from 2009-2012, during which time Kansas City ranked 12th, 6th, 10th, and 13th among AL teams in scoring. He was fired in October of last year, with the lack of development for Eric Hosmer and Mike Moustakas cited as key reasons.

Dutton notes that Seitzer and Blue Jays manager John Gibbons worked together on Kansas City’s coaching staff from 2009-2011.

If he can get JP to take a pitch then he’s a good hire…now all we need is a new pitching coach that actually is good.

JP takes lots of pitches, usually the ones over the plate, the problem is his swinging at the low and far outside breaking ball.

The Jays still have to hire a first base coach. Tim Raines is the leading candidate. Raines also knows something about base running, playing the outfield and was a very good hitter.

Will they let him coach first base wearing his Expos cap? I can’t picture Raines in a Blue Jays hat. :-)

Last season, Raines was a roving minor league instructor for the Jays. Raines is the leading candidate according to Shi Davidi. This does not mean that he has the job locked up.
