Indians release closer Chris Perez

Facing a decision on whether to tender him a 2014 contract via arbitration, the Indians have decided to simply release closer Chris Perez.

Perez made off-field headlines when he was arrested for having marijuana delivered to his house in his dog’s name this season, but he also missed time on the disabled list and struggled with a 4.33 ERA and five blown saves in 30 chances. He was a total mess down the stretch.

Perez was acquired from the Cardinals in the mid-2009 trade for Mark DeRosa and ended up spending five seasons in Cleveland, saving 124 games with a 3.33 ERA and 251 strikeouts in 268 innings. However, his velocity was down this season and he served up too many homers to go along with what has always been shaky control.

He’d have been in line for a raise on this year’s $7.3 million salary and it would have been tough for the Indians to justify that type of money for a 60-inning reliever who’s not even elite. Perez will surely draw plenty of interest as a free agent, but may have to compete for a closer gig or maybe even settle for a setup role.

It will certainly make things easier for his dog next year if he signs for a team in a 4/20 friendly state.

4.33 isn’t going to get you a big deal when the league average ERA was under 4.00. He’s probably destined for a one-year deal. If he’s smart-an open question-he’ll choose a pitchers park even at less money. He potentially has a lot of years left and one good year can make GM’s forgetful.

As for his poor dog, I’m sure the pooch is lobbying hard for Seattle or the CA teams. After all, if the pooch is smart enough to order by mail, he’s smart enough to understand park effects and state law.

Hey Guy, don’t forget the CO team: Rocky Mountain high, Colorado…

Thought about it, but not a pitcher’s park :)

Hey Guy, if a man loves his dog, he has to be willing to make a few sacrifices. Like Buehrle.

Tribe fans are the second happiest in all of MLB today. Thank God!

After this year, he’s set-up for life.

Random 100% unsubstantiated prediction: Astros sign him. Luhnow connection, low pressure, possibly rebuild his stock, Or, he may go to Seattle where he take bong rips before lumbering out to the mound, and flipping off the fans.

    That, like, totally blows!

This is an interesting move, Perez could be a nice signing for someone on a cheap, one-year deal. I know he was awful this year (4.33 ERA and 5.08 FIP) but he posted a pretty decent xFIP at 3.83, largely in part to a unbelievably ridiculous HR/FB of 20%. HR/FB tends to fluctuate and don’t have much predictive value, and considering that the majority of his peripherals were the same from when he was enjoying some success (9.00 K/9, 3.50 BB/9), I think he could be a nice gamble for someone in 2014.

He can join Alan Iverson in the officially unemployed d-bag not too bright stoner loser line.

    Good to see karma work.

Good bye, Chris. Hope you end up with the Marlins.

    My prediction for Perez:

Reds announce Chapman will be in the starting rotation in February, Walt Jocketty signs Perez to a 3 year, $30 million deal to be the closer, Chapman gets shifted back to closer in late March, Perez becomes just another expensive bullpen arm next to Broxton.
