The Dodgers and Don Mattingly are talking multi-year extension

Nov 7, 2013, 9:37 AM EDT

Just a couple of weeks ago Don Mattingly and Ned Colletti were doing this:

Now they’re talking, reports Ramona Shelburne of ESPN Los Angeles, and a multi-year deal could be in the offing:

The Los Angeles Dodgers are discussing a new, multiyear contract with manager Don Mattingly, two sources told No deal is imminent, but there is optimism on both sides that a new deal will be completed.

Previously it was announced that Mattingly would be back for his option year in 2014, but now it seems that he will not be a lame duck when he does.

Which makes sense. As I’ve said before, Mattingly is a great fit in L.A. and had an excellent 2013 season. Not just in terms of results but in terms of meshing a lot of difficult personalities, dealing with that early-season hole the Dodgers dug for themselves and handling the media scrutiny that comes with the job. And when you remember that, when he first got the job, he had a lot of issues with the simple of mechanics of managing, you realize how long a way he’s come.

Major League Baseball is not football or basketball. You can rarely hire a big-name famous guy to run your team and expect it to pay any kind of dividends. The Dodgers are doing the right thing by sticking with Mattingly.

    Amen, brotha.

Give him a contract extension at minimum wage. A novice baseball fan can manage this team with similar results.

Sorry but I beg to differ. Don’t get my intentions wrong because I’m a Dodgers fan. But Donny baseball was bitching about his contract and lack of a new contract during the first half of the season and that is largely why the team performed so poorly. Puig was clearly the star of Spring training, yet Donny baseball and others left him off the team. Donny stuck with League as the closer when EVERY Dodgers fan that I know said they should have Jansen as the closer. A manager who has learned a lot??? The Dodgers went through the exact thing the year before with Havey Lopez as closer. Things weren’t right then either until Jansen became the closer. Who will Donny have as the closer next year??? Davey Lopes?

Donny Baseball looks good in that Dawgah Blue

angry @ the tradition of having 2 managers since the 50’s was smeared and tarnished because of imbecilic owners

    SEVEN! managers since the 90’s

you bums don’t know the importance of continuity

    mattingly sucks as a manager.

  7. seniorboy - Nov 7, 2013 at 8:37 PM

Mattingly refuses to play small ball, allowing his hitters to continue to hit into double plays and he cannot possibly fathom the art of the bunt whether in a sacrifice or a squeeze of simply an attempt at a base hit. The huge numbers of runners left on base indicates a poor batting coach, i.e. McGuire and he should be fired also. Both Mattingly and his cohorts simply sit around, chew gum, spit out seeds and or spit. Nothing seems to get done in the way of strategy and nothing in the manner of tactics indicates Mattingly’s desire to remain status quo. He is a boring manager and letting him go would be a blessing. If they give him a multi-year contract, so much for saving money.
