Report: Mariners want Cruz & Beltran, not so much Ellsbury

ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick has the Mariners aiming for a couple of outfielders, but not the center fielder they’ve long been connected to.

Ellsbury was born in Oregon and went to school at Oregon State, so it’s long been thought he might prefer a return to the Pacific Northwest if the Red Sox don’t meet his asking price. That might not be in the cards, though. After all, Ellsbury can play defense, and the Mariners aren’t about to pay him to do that.

So, Beltran and Cruz instead? It’s highly unlikely, given that Beltran could have his pick of offers from the Cardinals, Red Sox, Yankees and Rangers. Cruz is a more realistic target, with the Rangers seemingly willing to let him go. Last season’s steroid ban has cut into his market some, but it’s not likely to stop him from getting at least a three-year deal. The Mariners could use him as a corner outfielder next season and then transition him to DH later once they again come to the realization that defense matters.

well I guess they got tired of all defense and no offense, they are looking for power. Can’t blame them when they wasted years on players with no bats and all glove. Atleast they’re trying Seatle…

Actually…they were improving for a couple years straight with that model. Then, last off-season, they suddenly changed direction and started acquiring big bat/no glove outfielders who were really DH/1B types….kind of like Beltran and Cruz, now. Then they had their worst year since 2010. Did you know Seattle was 2nd in the AL in HR in 2013? Lot of good that did ‘em.

well then I take my statement back. Good points. Though I think they didn’t notice that for the reason they continue to look for the long ball.

A cheater and a guy who does not fit into a long-term plan of a young M’s squad. Seems like the Jack Z thing to do. I see huuuge multi-year contracts and .220 avg’s, and huuuge disappointments!

Cruz plays 120 games a year and Beltran is like 50 and will show that age of course once he wears a mariner uniform.

Jack Z is trying to add anyone, any bat…No free agent in his right mind wants to come to Seattle and play. It seems to be where FA’s go to die…

There’s a reason people leave the northwest and never come back…

It’s a beautiful place there, but winters last longer than they do in Game of Thrones.
