Heyman: no truth to the Jose Bautista-for-Domonic Brown rumor

Nov 13, 2013, 9:20 AM EDT

Toronto Blue Jays' Bautista looks into the stands between innings during a MLB American League baseball game against the Tampa Bay Rays in St. Petersburg Reuters

Last night Howard Eskin of 94 WIP in Philly reported that the Blue Jays and Phillies were discussing a possible Jose Bautista-for-Dominic Brown trade. It was something of a crazy rumor as far as these things go, but I suppose there is crazier.

Jon Heyman says this morning, however, that there’s nothing to it. Eskin is holding firm, saying it’s still a thing, but given that Heyman tends to have pretty darn good sourcing when it comes to Phillies stuff — and given that Eskin is not exactly at the vanguard of breaking baseball news — I’m going with Heyman here.

Hey what do you know? The Blue Jays aren’t TOTAL morons.

    • bfunk1978 - Nov 13, 2013 at 10:11 AM

Gah. I downvoted me, too. I meant to say the Phillies aren’t total morons. Sheesh.

      • proudlycanadian - Nov 13, 2013 at 10:22 AM

Not sure about that comment about the Phillies; however, Howard Eskin seems to come close the description of a “moron”.

Well with Brown being on the right side of 30 and way cheaper than Bautista (who has now had 2 years of injuries in a row), it doesn’t seem like a good way to spend money. Surely even the Phillies can figure that out. If I were the Jays I’d want Brown too, even though he’s not a great fielder.

You have a strange sense of humor.

Eskin gets a bad wrap in Philly from the homers, but he is hardly EVER right when he reports breaking news. I can recall about four times he’s been way off base this year.

    • Francisco (FC) - Nov 13, 2013 at 9:57 AM

So off base even Ben Revere and his noodle arm could double him up off first.

    • chill1184 - Nov 13, 2013 at 10:11 AM

Sounds like he’s Philly’s version of NYs Incarcerated Bob

Eskin likes to call him self “The King”. The only thing he is the king of is Bull$%^& Land.

You’ve leaned a valuable lesson. You have a better chance of getting a scoop by using a Ouija board, then by using Eskin.

    • noodles73 - Nov 13, 2013 at 11:22 AM

The only reason he known as “The King” is the fact that he looks exactly like The Burger King character.

  4. proudlycanadian - Nov 13, 2013 at 10:11 AM

So bogus that I have to wonder what “The King” was smoking.

!) the Jays do not need Brown. If Bautista was ever traded, his replacement would be in house (probably Sierra).

    2) They do not need Ruf. They have Encarnacion and Lind to play first base.

    3) The Jays need starting pitching not a weak fielding outfielder.

    • proudlycanadian - Nov 13, 2013 at 10:16 AM

One other point. Melky Cabrera seems to be recovering very well from the operation to remove the tumor from his back. It was attached to his spine. It was the tumor that caused the reduction in his range in the outfield last season. One more reason why the Jays do not need Brown.

    • jm91rs - Nov 13, 2013 at 1:35 PM

Probably smoking crack with the Toronto mayor.

      • proudlycanadian - Nov 13, 2013 at 1:37 PM

Weak. You can do better than that.

  5. andreweac - Nov 13, 2013 at 10:15 AM

Amaro loves Bautista’s tWtW and gri more than Brown’s.

    • proudlycanadian - Nov 13, 2013 at 10:17 AM

So does everyone else including the Jays.

I wonder how much of this story is wishcasting and attempting to ‘wag the dog’ on the part of Eskin? His thinking might be that if he can create enough controversy in the media it might create a rift in the Beaver Igloo. Stir up Bautista, create a problem, get him traded, possibly to the Phillies. This can’t be any crazier a notion than The Beaver Management wanting Brown or Ruf who fulfil ZERO needs.

All in all, I think the likelihood of JB going anywhere is pretty slim.

    • Francisco (FC) - Nov 13, 2013 at 12:11 PM

Well, it wouldn’t be the first time a Phan nabbed Joey Bats from you Cur.

      • cur68 - Nov 13, 2013 at 2:05 PM

And how did THAT work out fer ya, eh? Whole season on the DL. Tsk. You don’t know how to look after your players, mang. Horse steroids, elephant amphetamines, and raw seal blubber is the ticket. Not that jungle juice, weak Philly beer y’all been swillin’.

      • Francisco (FC) - Nov 13, 2013 at 2:37 PM

Totally worth it. It spawned your catchphrase: “Violently Unstable.” That sounds like the name for a heavy metal band!

Uncle Cholly would knock Eskin out.
