Brewers GM Doug Melvin thinks the Mets could make a good trading partner

Nov 17, 2013, 10:00 PM EDT

Ike Davis

The Brewers need a first baseman, that much is obvious. Long time outfielder Corey Hart is one option, and one that Brewers GM Doug Melvin has certainly considered. Melvin, however, is looking towards the Big Apple as a creative way to round out his roster, noticing that the Mets will be open to moving Ike Davis.

Via MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy:

“They’ve indicated that they have extra first basemen, and we have a need,” Melvin said. “Again, it’s all about keeping your options open. … Nothing imminent, and I don’t anticipate anything imminent. But first base is one of our needs, they have excess first basemen, so you can tie two and two together — and come up with three.”

The embattled Davis started off the 2013 season very poorly, posting a .500 OPS through June 9. The Mets sent him to Triple-A Las Vegas to focus on reworking himself both mechanically and mentally. He improved, getting on base at a .429 clip between July 5 and August 31 before his season ended due to a strained oblique. Davis, however, finished with just nine home runs one year after hitting 32 of them. Davis still has two years of control left before he can become a free agent, something Mets GM Sandy Alderson will keep in mind when trying to find a suitable trading partner.

Segura and cash for Davis seems reasonable for both sides

Works for me, Davis would have a good chance to bounce back for the Brew Crew and the Mets get a nice young shortstop you can actually hit.

You mean Sandy’s been hitting Tejada all this time? No wonder he’s filing a grievance.

The sarcasm was pretty evident in the first post, but you seem to have bit into the fake pretty hard.

Ha! Davis might be a worthwhile pickup, but no way do you give up Segura for him.

    • m007fone - Nov 18, 2013 at 9:45 AM

you must be high ,davis and cash for segura why not tell them to throw in their top ten prospects also ,now davis for aoki is more likely to happen .the brewers giving up their best player earning the minimum and under control for 2-3 years for the mets garbage who will be under the 3rd largest contract is ludicrous .stop being stupid and get back to reality

Why would brewers give up segura for that bum ? Are you out of your mind lol and what happen to brewers Juan Francisco ? He’s a better player overall then Ike . Far better !!!!!

Lay off the crack guys. Not a chance in hell Segura gets traded for Ike Davis.

  4. thebadguyswon - Nov 17, 2013 at 11:01 PM

    Ike for Aoki.

    • pack93z - Nov 18, 2013 at 2:16 PM

Brewers have options in the outfield.. although that would leave a hole at the top of the batting order. I could see NY being appealing to Aoki though.. a bit more diverse culturally which might lead to a bit more opportunities in terms of marketing.

Would make sense.. but Aoki is only under control for another season.

    Uh….kinda think beast2727 is kidding…..

  6. phillysports1 - Nov 17, 2013 at 11:06 PM

Yea that guy up there you mean ^

  7. spacemaker101 - Nov 18, 2013 at 6:59 AM

I would trade Gomez before Segura js..

  8. phillysports1 - Nov 18, 2013 at 8:58 AM

Yea I will trade Gomez before segura . But the twist here is trading any of those two guys for IKE DAVIS . I would never trade neither both for Davis . That’s the story here

  9. uwsptke - Nov 18, 2013 at 9:25 AM

Melvin could just re-sign Hart. The Mets have indicated that they want to sign Hart, despite having an “excess in first basemen”, but they may have interest in him as a RF (which makes no sense since he’s a below average OF, but has the tools to be an elite defensive 1B at 6′ 6″).

I have a feeling that they’ll let Hart go, and then trade Aoki for Davis. Just re-sign Hart and trade Aoki for something more useful.

I don’t care who you put at first! if the brewers don’t make some moves for pitching no ones going to be talking about their smart move they made for a first baseman. I think there’s options on the team now for a first baseman, if any tades happen I really, really hope Doug Melvin looks to sure up that rotation.

Just throwing this out there – given the bad PR around Braun, would Sandy Alderson be able to get Doug Melvin to pick up 85% of what’s left on Braun’s contract in return for Ike Davis, Ruben Tejada and a minor leaguer?

    • m007fone - Nov 18, 2013 at 9:52 AM

I doubt the brewers would pay anything on that contract Melvin would sooner trade him for nothing than pay braun to play against him .if they do trade braun it would be to the American league so they would not see hm that much .I actually believe the brewers lawyers are trying to find a way to cut ties with him altogether

      • brewcrewfan54 - Nov 18, 2013 at 12:57 PM

Trying to get rid of Braun altogether? Just stop. That’s not happening.

  12. beast2727 - Nov 28, 2013 at 12:59 AM

How about aoki Braun and segura for Ike , Reuben and Jason bay that seems a little more reasonable then my first post
