The Padres announced this evening that Dave Roberts will serve as bench coach next season while Jose Valentin will replace him as first base coach.

This is a promotion for Roberts, who has served as the first base coach for the club for the past three seasons. He’s taking over for Rick Renteria, who was recently hired as manager of the Cubs.

Valentin, who played 16 seasons in the majors, has been the manager of the Padres’ Class A affiliate in Fort Wayne for the past two seasons. This will be his first coaching job in the major leagues.

Oh Dave Roberts and my Red Sox stolen base. Almost 10 years and still the greatest steal in sox history if not the greatest play.

Without a doubt, the single most important stolen base in baseball history. I can’t even think what would be in second place.

The trade that got you Dave Roberts in a deadline deal for a AA outfielder never to be seen in a Dodgers uniform.

Paul DePodesta should have gotten a 2004 Red Sox ring.

Jackie Robinson stealing home in the World Series?

I was wondering if Renteria was going to bring Roberts over to the Cubs as a 1st or 3rd base coach, but now that question has been answered.

Glad to see Dave Roberts progressing. Hopefully, one day he’ll manage.
