From Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News comes word the the Indians have reached agreement on a two-year contract with free agent outfielder David Murphy. It’s expected to be worth more than $10 million, though no exact figure has been released.

Murphy posted a career-worst .656 OPS in 2013, but the left-handed hitter had a .304/.380/.479 slash line in 2012 and fits nicely into an outfield platoon with the right-handed-hitting Ryan Raburn in Cleveland.

Murphy spent seven years with the Texas Rangers, batting .275/.337/.440 with 85 home runs and 362 RBI in 826 games. He was a first-round pick of the Red Sox (at No. 17 overall) in the 2003 MLB Amateur Draft.

The 32-year-old could prove to be a nice pickup in a market of massive deals.

Cleveland will likely either trade or non-tender the now-expendable Drew Stubbs.

nice move by the indians, and makes good sense to platoon him with raburn. probably means goodbye drew stubbs.

Was Murphy playing hurt this season?

    364 PAs against RHP = .685 OPS

Hate to see Murphy leave but it was probably time now that Gentry has proven to be a strong 4th OF. Not sure what happened last season with his hitting but he always played his ass off. Good luck in Clev.

Gentry proved he was a strong 4th OF in 2011

It’s nice to see the Indians make a move in the offseason, and he should fit nicely in the platoon with Ryan.

Nice move by the Tribe. They are establishing themselves a pretty solid team.

Let Stubbs go and A) they have nothing in exchange for Choo; B) wbo backs up CF?

    • paperlions - Nov 20, 2013 at 8:33 AM

      A) Yes they do, though if Bauer will ever stop screwing with his delivery and regain his previous form is unknown.

      B) You don’t keep a guy that is nearly useless and that is getting more expensive just to have something to show for trading a player.

      1) brantley can also play center field, his former position. 2) They got Trevor Bauer for Choo. Bauer was the main piece in the trade for Choo. Stubbs was a throw-in. They have Bauer( one of major leagues top pitching prospects, and already major league ready in their control until 2019!). 3) They were never going to be able to re-sign Choo anyway. Just look at the contract that Boras is demanding for choo and all the teams lining up to sign him. There was no way he was going to be in cleveland next year. It’s a miracle the Indians got so much in return. I guess i have to say i totally disagree with your assessment of the choo for Bauer and stubbs trade.

But can he hit above the Mendoza line? Does he strike out a lot?

Keep Stubbs for situations. Good move for the tribe. CHIEF WAHOO IS SMILING
