A “body language expert” says that A-Rod was lying yesterday

Nov 21, 2013, 8:45 AM EDT

Alex Rodriguez Reuters Reuters

It takes a pretty naive and/or trusting person to listen to everything A-Rod has to say about Biogenesis, PEDs and all of that and conclude that he doesn’t lie and mislead about those things sometimes. Or often, actually. I mean, even defenders of the guy like me wouldn’t bet breakfast on A-Rod being truthful about this stuff. Even if you think that his punishment (and the character judgments of others) don’t fit his crimes, he’s just got too much baggage to be given anything close to the benefit of the doubt when it comes to the veracity of any specific thing he says.

But in case you were one of those people who are inclined to believe what Alex Rodriguez says, the Star-Ledger has consulted with a “body language expert” and she says A-Rod is lying:

Alex Rodriguez lied during his interview with WFAN radio host Mike Francesa Wednesday, body language expert Susan Constantine told NJ.com . . . Constantine watched the interview, which was also broadcast on the YES Network. Rodriguez’s movements and evasive responses to some questions gave away what he was really thinking, the body language expert said.

I don’t know anything about body language science (if it is indeed a science). But I do feel like the least interesting thing about any of this drama is whether anything A-Rod is saying is the truth. The interesting thing is that he’s saying stuff at all, and the impact those things — truthful or otherwise — have on his future, the Yankees future and the future of Major League Baseball’s drug testing and enforcement system.

Well that would make sense, considering he’s a liar.

    • fanofevilempire - Nov 21, 2013 at 11:45 AM

Commissioner of MLB is not above testifying at a trial in which he has accused someone of committing offenses in which he handed down a suspension for.
Bud Selig should be a MAN and face the man he accuses and to which he handed down a suspension.

      • sawxalicious - Nov 22, 2013 at 3:10 AM

        Pretty sure it’s not a trial….

  2. tominma - Nov 21, 2013 at 8:52 AM

We don need no stinkin expert to tell us that AROD is lying!!

Word is the evidence against him is much stronger than against Ryan Braun!

    • NatsLady - Nov 21, 2013 at 9:59 AM

It still amazes me the number of people who were fooled by Braun’s “sincere” press conference.

    • fanofevilempire - Nov 21, 2013 at 11:49 AM

do you believe in Santa too?
you fellas are watching too much espn.

A “body language expert” says that A-Rod was lying yesterday

    Dr. Cal Lightman?

  4. chill1184 - Nov 21, 2013 at 9:02 AM

Well he IS a liar, I don’t need some “body language expert” to tell me that

  5. chiadam - Nov 21, 2013 at 9:08 AM

Take your next paycheck and play 30 minutes of poker with a professional. When you can’t pay your rent, tell me if reading body language is legitimate or not.

    • NatsLady - Nov 21, 2013 at 9:53 AM

The trick to professional poker isn’t body language, it’s folding. A LOT. Recognizing when the odds are against you and folding. Social poker players are in it for the fun, and folding isn’t fun. Professionals are in it for the money.

      • stoutfiles - Nov 21, 2013 at 10:35 AM

Wrong. The secret to professional poker is getting everyone else to fold. A pro will win most of his money without the river card ever being shown.

If you fold a lot and wait for that big hand, not only will everyone know what they’re up against, they will destroy you when they play a crap hand and hit on the flop, knowing then can bust you.

      • km9000 - Nov 21, 2013 at 11:22 AM

You can make money sticking to good cards all day, esp if you play multiple tables online, but it takes a while and isn’t exactly fun.

Another key is not falling in love with your cards and not being afraid to fold. And knowing the odds and making the “correct” play, even if the result doesn’t go your way.

I can’t do these, so I hate poker.

      • paperlions - Nov 21, 2013 at 11:23 AM

Exactly, the key to winning at poker is two fold 1) misrepresentation of your own hand, getting people to think they have better cards than you when they don’t and to think that they have worse cards than you when they don’t (pros are hard to fool, so they usually just try to provide you with no information), and 2) accurately reading the other player in any way you can, by betting patterns or anything else they are willing to give away.

      • eatitfanboy - Nov 21, 2013 at 11:52 AM

Most top pros will tell you that physical tells are over rated. But saying there is one way to make money playing poker is absurd. Dan Harrington and Gus Hansen have both made tens of millions playing poker and they play the game completely differently.

  6. deadeyedesign23 - Nov 21, 2013 at 9:16 AM

Does “expert” mean having two eyes and a brain in your skull?

  7. pisano - Nov 21, 2013 at 9:17 AM

” Arod was lying yesterday” – What else is new?

  8. gdog97 - Nov 21, 2013 at 9:20 AM

Mike Francesa missed a targeted follow-up question from the interview highlights I saw. He asked A-Rod about if he had taken any PED’s, to which of course A-Rod said ‘No’, and then Francesa just reiterated it saying something about, ‘just so we have it on record, you’re saying no, you never used PED’s’ or something to that responsibility.

Why wasn’t there a follow up with ‘Alex, if you didn’t take PED’s, why are you being accused of trying to purchase and destroy documents from the Biogenesis lab?’ Make him explain that.

I can certainly understand A-Rod wanting to ask Selig some questions. But clearly A-Rod is being coached to put on a show and try to distract from the fact he’s trying to hide something.

That was a fairly worthless interview.

    • chill1184 - Nov 21, 2013 at 9:35 AM

You honestly expect an actual hard hitting interview that actually pressures A-Rod from a Yankee propagandist and stooge like Mike Francesa? You would get a more objective interview of out Obama from MSNBC.

    • aceshigh11 - Nov 21, 2013 at 9:54 AM

Francesa has been phoning it (literally) for years.

    • churchoftheperpetuallyoutraged - Nov 21, 2013 at 9:58 AM

Fatcesca: ‘Alex, if you didn’t take PED’s, why are you being accused of trying to purchase and destroy documents from the Biogenesis lab?’
Arod: Mike I never did anything of the sort. MLB is paying off a witness and bought stolen documents. What makes you think they are being honest in this case?

      Ok, now what?

      • NatsLady - Nov 21, 2013 at 10:01 AM

Did he say the witness was lying or that the documents were forged…?

      • johnchesterny - Nov 21, 2013 at 10:20 AM

Fatcesca: ‘What makes me think they are being honest? How about 12 other players, including Ryan Braun, accepting their guilt based on the same evidence?’

      • pappageorgio - Nov 21, 2013 at 11:13 AM

        Technicalities.

Why are “you” being accused of buying doc’s?

“I” haven’t done anything of the sort.

A-Rod gets his entourage/minions to do everything…..”he” didn’t try to destroy or buy docs, head other do it for him. It’s a big game to him.

    • fanofevilempire - Nov 21, 2013 at 11:48 AM

how do expect him to tell why he is being accused, that is the dumbest question ever.

      • ilovegspot - Nov 21, 2013 at 5:06 PM

The point is to put him on the spot with that question. Of course he is going to lie., that’s what aroid does. What a moron.

  9. yankeefanincolo - Nov 21, 2013 at 9:25 AM

And what was the body language that indicated he was lying? His mouth was moving!

  10. golfrangeman - Nov 21, 2013 at 9:34 AM

Body language expert !!! I believe in witches and goblins too.

  11. aceshigh11 - Nov 21, 2013 at 9:53 AM

    BETTER CALL SAUL!

  12. NatsLady - Nov 21, 2013 at 9:55 AM

Interesting take on MLB’s tactics (not focused on Rodriguez, but, in general).

  13. tfbuckfutter - Nov 21, 2013 at 9:59 AM

I’m a body language expert too. The easiest way to tell if Alex is lying is to watch his mouth. When it starts moving that is when he is starting to lie.

  14. indaburg - Nov 21, 2013 at 10:01 AM

There’s some valid research out there that suggests body language is better than facial expressions at interpretating someone’s true feelings. That said, we don’t need no stinkin’ experts to tell us A-rod was probably not telling the whole truth. His past history is just too checkered.

  15. yahmule - Nov 21, 2013 at 10:12 AM

How do we know the body language expert wasn’t lying? If I knew all the secrets to successful lying, I would never tell the truth about anything.

  16. cohnjusack - Nov 21, 2013 at 10:21 AM

He’s probably lying, but “body language expert” is nearly as big of a crock of poo as “phernology expert”.

  17. proudlycanadian - Nov 21, 2013 at 10:37 AM

If he gives you the time of day, it is wise to get a second opinion.

  18. righthandofjustice - Nov 21, 2013 at 11:16 AM

The truth is: only one man with no guilt has ever walked the earth. He is also the way and the life.

This “body language expert” can look at Obama, The Pope, Selig, you and certainly me and tell everybody we all lied and have guilt at a certain point. Oh! Don’t forget to ask herself to look into the mirror!

    • tfbuckfutter - Nov 21, 2013 at 11:43 AM

Look man, I love Lemmy Kilmister as much as anyone….but I’m sure he’s felt some guilt at some point or another.

  19. eatitfanboy - Nov 21, 2013 at 11:53 AM

If Arod told me the sky was blue, I would look out a window to check. But you’re right, Craig, this story stopped being about whether or not Arod is telling the truth a long, long time ago.

  20. coltzfan166 - Nov 21, 2013 at 1:10 PM

Yeah, so in other words, there’s nothing new to report.

    Nothing to see here people.
