UPDATE: Salisbury says it’s a done deal and McClure is the Phillies’ new pitching coach.

==========

Numerous candidates have turned down a chance to become the Phillies’ new pitching coach, but Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com reports that Bob McClure “has become the lead candidate” for the job.

McClure has served as a pitching coach for the Rockies, Royals, and Red Sox, but was fired by Boston in August of 2012 amid the Bobby Valentine-related mess and there were reports suggesting he was the leak of behind-the-scenes clubhouse details that surfaced.

Setting that aside, McClure has a ton of experience as a big-league pitching coach and … well, the Phillies are running out of other options at this point. Plus, just look at that mustache.

    Is he related to Troy?

      I remember him from such films as “Major League I and II”.

    It’s funny that every article mentions the people who rejected the job. If we really knew how many 2nd, 3rd, or 4th options were brought on as coaches, we’d see it happens pretty regularly, I don’t think it’s some earth shattering point to continue to mention. Especially when one (McDowell) used the job opening to get a raise from the Braves.

    Yes, we got our pitch charter. Because that’s the only real purpose of the pitching coach

      No, he’s important for making that first trip to the mound to buy time for the reliever warming up.

    Would have preferred to see them hire Jamie Moyer.

      Jamie wanted to be the first pitching coach/starter. MLB doesn’t even do player/manager anymore.

      Moyer doesn’t want to coach. Why would he want to travel around the country for a few hundred thousand bucks? He’s got MILLIONS already and wants to spend time with his kids if he isn’t going to be pitching.

    I met Mclure in the summer of 73 when I went to Billings Montana to see a college teammate of mine, Bobby Falcon pitch. McLure is a great guy, and was a good relief pitcher forever, and glad to see him out of the Valentine mess. He will do a good job for the Phillies
