Brian McCann is open to playing some first base, DH

Alex Speier of WEEI spoke with Brian McCann’s agent, B.B. Abbott, and Abbott said the kinds of things that will help his client get paid. Specifically, that his client will play first base and DH if it means helping out his new team and getting more playing time in the long run.

The biggest thing McCann has working against him in the market is the idea that, at age 30, he has a lot of miles on the odometer behind the plate. If he is willing and able to move around and play other positions, that’ll help things along.

And what is Brian McCann if not flexible and willing to think outside of the box?

How is he going to enforce the unwritten rules of the game as a DH?

Wow, did this really offend you that much?

Again the first comment is a Sheriff McCann joke. How original guy

Why don’t you have a good cry about it?

We let the thumbs decide. Eventually the down thumbs will muster their troops and the joke will be banished for good.

Any joke worth telling is worth beating to death.

McCann’s all about thinking outside the (batter’s) box. He goes well up the third base line to confront scofflaws and ne’er-do-wells.

Here is the proof that he is catching a plane to Detroit in the next couple of days. It makes perfect sense. Keep Miggy at 3rd for 1 more year and let V-Mart play out his contract platooning at 1st with McCann. this gives McCann time to learn the position and he can also spell Avila behind the plate. After year 1, McCann can play 1st base full time and you can re-sign V-Mart as a DH. Or, if Castellanos is ready to play a big league 1st base, McCann and and Miggy can platoon at 1st and DH and the money spen on V-Mart can go towards extensions for Miggy and Scherzer.

The Tigers traded Fielder to free money to keep pitchers like Scherzer, not to sign McCann…. They also needed a new 2nd basemen.

    Cry baby.

Martinez is their full time DH . He’s not going platoon with McCann . Never

Martinez is the most likely candidate to play 1st base this season. He’s a team player and would gladly take a position back in the field if the team needed him to. He spent at least 1 season playing 1st base for the Red Sox. The Tigers did not move Castellanos to LF 2 years ago because he was blocked by Cabrera, they did it because he is not a big league 3rd baseman. They have no other replacement for Fielder and Dombrowski has already said that he most likely will not be moving Cabrera from 3rd to 1st this season. Martinez is only signed through 2014. McCann is the same type of hitter as Martinez and has 5 years on him. This season can be a transition year for him to learn 1st base on the fly, while Castellanos reaquaints himself with 3rd base at AAA or better yet continues his development as a LF (he currently is below avg at reading fly balls off the bat and he needs serious work on his outfield throwing mechanics). At the end of this year, They can re-sign and put Martinez right back into his role as a full time DH or let him walk and bring up Castellanos. Either way, you have an excellent left handed gap hitter with plus power for the #5 hole for years to come

VMart only played 14 games at 1st base for the Red Sox.

The Red Sox are badly in need of a Catcher. Bet dollars to donuts McCann ends up there.
