Report: Minnesota Twins opposing WWE trademark for “Bella Twins”

Nov 21, 2013, 12:46 PM EDT

bella twins

Here’s a weird story from Philly.com about the Minnesota Twins and the WWE:

Nikki and Brie Bella, born Nicole and Brianna Garcia-Colace, joined the WWE in 2007. The WWE named them the Bella Twins and trademarked the name, which is a very common practice from the company.

The Twins have apparently taken offense to this trademark and have decided to oppose it. The Twins have filed for an extension in the opposition and have until Feb. 12 to make the opposition official or ask for another extension.

I’d make a lawyer joke here, but Calcaterra might read this.

Seriously though, what about the Olsen Twins or the Mowry Twins or the Lopez Twins?

(And yes, this entire post was merely an excuse for me to mention Tia and Tamera Mowry. Go ahead, sue me.)

    Classless organization.

    • dluxxx - Nov 21, 2013 at 3:42 PM

Yeah, I’m not too impressed with WWE either.

  2. johnnysoda - Nov 21, 2013 at 12:55 PM

By this logic, I guess no one should ever be allowed to use the words “twins” for anything. Ridiculous.

    • proudlycanadian - Nov 21, 2013 at 1:49 PM

They didn’t sue the TV show Twin Peaks.

      • barbiefails - Nov 22, 2013 at 7:18 AM

None of those shows tried to trademark the word ‘twins’

  3. magicrat13 - Nov 21, 2013 at 1:01 PM

ridiculous…..what’s next?…suing hostess for the term “twinkies”?

    • proudlycanadian - Nov 21, 2013 at 1:51 PM

Hostess has enough problems, plus they had the name first.

  4. 18thstreet - Nov 21, 2013 at 1:06 PM

I think they should sue the Governor for using the word “Minnesota” in his title.

  5. aphillieated - Nov 21, 2013 at 1:13 PM

Oh man, the chick in the right is fine as hell..

    • Francisco (FC) - Nov 21, 2013 at 1:48 PM

Does it make a difference to point out which one you were referring to?

      • source7769 - Nov 21, 2013 at 2:45 PM

it does if you are John Cena or Daniel Brian

    • jimmyt - Nov 21, 2013 at 2:25 PM

Wow, she is fine but look at the nancy boys giving your comment a thumbs down. Must be “happy” guys.

      • 18thstreet - Nov 21, 2013 at 5:33 PM

OMG. Someone from 1952 invented a time machine and is using it to post to this blog.

        Nancy boys? Really?

    • flippstermn - Nov 22, 2013 at 5:05 PM

Hmmm, fine as hell? Nothing in hell is fine. I would re-word your remark to something that makes more sense. LOL
I have heard these other saying also used incorrectly:
      Funny as hell
      Cold as hell
      Cute as hell
      Sweet as hell
and the only one I like so far is Hot as hell, that one makes sense anyway :-)

  6. happytwinsfan - Nov 21, 2013 at 1:38 PM

as long as they sign at least one upper tier FA starter, i’m okay with them suing whoever they want

  7. MLBlogsbig3bosox - Nov 21, 2013 at 1:51 PM

“(And yes, this entire post was merely an excuse for me to mention Tia and Tamera Mowry. Go ahead, sue me.)”

I see what you did there. Craig might see this, Aaron!

  8. proudlycanadian - Nov 21, 2013 at 1:54 PM

They did not sue Arnold and Danny DeVito. Must have been afraid of Arnold.

    • unclearnie - Nov 21, 2013 at 2:42 PM

They should have been afraid of the serial Boobengrabber – look at the mess he made in California. However, Gov. Brown seems to have fixed things back up now.

      • asimonetti88 - Nov 21, 2013 at 3:30 PM

“However, Gov. Brown seems to have fixed things back up now”

        Hardly

      • unclearnie - Nov 21, 2013 at 4:09 PM

Sacramento Bee 11/21/13 “State Analysts project years of budget surpluses” Arnold’s first act was to punch a 4 to 6 billion dollar annual hole in the budget.

  9. daveitsgood - Nov 21, 2013 at 1:57 PM

Maybe Patrick Reusse’s suggestion of “Sissy Twins” was already taken, so Bella Twins was their next best option?

  10. barrywhererufrom - Nov 21, 2013 at 2:54 PM

Whats next the zodac sign Gemini¿ This is just.wrong..

  11. bobwsc - Nov 21, 2013 at 2:55 PM

    when is “WrestlingTalk” coming?

    • km9000 - Nov 22, 2013 at 1:10 AM

The ending to the 6-on-6 tag match on this past “Raw” was one of the best things all year.

The Divas’ so-called “musical chairs” segment (which included the Bella Twins), was… one of the worst things all year.

  12. moogro - Nov 21, 2013 at 3:02 PM

I’d love to read the judge’s decision if their birth surnames were Minnesota.

  13. pwshrugged - Nov 21, 2013 at 3:45 PM

Just when you think the Twins organization can’t be more of a joke… they go above and beyond.

    *golf clap*

  14. Bryz - Nov 21, 2013 at 5:59 PM

    Really, Twins?

  15. anthonyverna - Nov 21, 2013 at 6:16 PM

I’m a lawyer and we do trademark, copyright and advertising law in our practice.

MLB, the NFL, the NBA and the NHL often object and oppose any trademark with any of the team names in those trademark applications.

Now, in fact, no opposition proceeding has been filed. MLB has held up the application with what we call an extension of time (to review the application publicly). But, I know that’s a technical detail that nobody wants to deal with.

It’s quite typical – then what MLB usually does is negotiate an agreement that the trademark will not be used in conjunction with anything baseball related. Every situation is different, but I wouldn’t be too surprised if something similar happens in this case.

  16. realgone2 - Nov 21, 2013 at 9:38 PM

oh and according to Tony Atlas these 2 are into scat…….take that for what you will.

  17. sawxalicious - Nov 22, 2013 at 3:59 AM

Um….they are twins….their stage (last) name is Bella….so Bella Twins….I would never in a million years turn the TV on, see these two girls and associate them with baseball much less the Minnesota Twins. This has got to be an Onion article or something…if not….waste of time…

So is Pittsburgh gonna sue the gentlemen hijacking ships off the coast of Africa?
Is San Fransisco going to go after the car wash/gas station chain?
Is St Louis going after the religious guys regionally in charge of priests?
Is Texas gonna sue the 75th Ranger Regiment or the law enforcement folks particular to Texas?
Is Seattle gonna sue the folks being hijacked by the gentlemen being sued by Pittsburgh?
    When does it end?

  18. buddaley - Nov 22, 2013 at 7:07 AM

It reminds me of the story that when the Marx Brothers made a movie called “A Night in Casablanca”, Warner Brothers threatened to sue because the title was too close to their classic movie “Casablanca”. Groucho allegedly threatened a counter-suit against Warner’s for having the word “Brothers” in their name, something the Marx Brothers had first.
