The Rangers may not be done yet

Nov 21, 2013, 9:15 AM EDT

Landing Prince Fielder is a pretty big move. But Ken Rosenthal reports that the Rangers may still sign a big free agent or trade one of their middle infielders:

It would be weird to move Profar given that they just freed up a space for him with the Kinsler deal. The notion of adding another bat, however — or trying to use the Cardinals’ need for a shortstop to pry away something from their rich farm system — is a good one.

The Rangers didn’t take on a lot of additional salary this year by trading for Fielder since they removed Kinsler. So they definitely still have budget to make additional moves. I think its more likely they trade Elvis rather than move Profar. Trading Elvis would allow more salary to fill other holes. Unless they can trade Profar and fill there various holes (OF,DH,Catcher).

That would be great if they did make a deal with the cards but sence kensler is gone I dont see that one happening anymore unless they are considering cano.

I agree the only way they trade Elvis or Profar is if they are signing Cano. I don’t think they can pay both Elvis and Cano with the other holes they still have to fill. That’s why I think its much more likely they would trade Elvis if they make another trade. I think they would prefer to have Profar at SS where he has played more but doesn’t mean they will make a deal.

I say they should trade profar to the cards for miller and fill the second base position by goin out and getting Phillips from the reds I’m sure they wouldn’t have to give up a lot they would just have to eat his salary but I’m a cards fan so sending profar to the central and getting Phillips out of the central sounds good to me of course

The Rangers still have 2 great MIF prospects in Sardinas (SS) and Odor (2B). Each is more than a year away, but both have a lot of promise….there is zero reason for Texas to sign an expensive MIF even if they trade Andrus or Profar. All they would need is a stopgap. The Rangers system is still loaded with high upside athletic position prospects that can hit and already have a lot of trade value if they wanted to trade for pitching without touching their MLB roster.

Agree with paperlions. Odor, in particular is garnering a lot of attention from baseball people. A few feel he is barely a step below Profar (at 2B only) mostly due to offensive potential. Sardinas is seen as fairly equal with Andrus. Maybe not quite the athleticism but more of a pure baseball player. Elvis hasn’t translated his gifts into consistent production on the offensive end.

@jvandever007 The Cardinals won’t be trading Miller for anybody.

If the Cardinals can get Profar for a package centered around Miller, they’d do it in a heartbeat.

The rangers are in win now mode. I would not be surprised to see mccann sign there, and i would be shocked if they were done signing players. If you want one of their middle infielders or any player for that matter they signaled their willingness to deal with the fielder/kinsler trade. I think gms are going to be pleasantly surprised if they approach them for some of their young players, the rangers are almost all in. Contending now has always beat contending years from now in baseball and that is what texas is staring in the face and they are making their choice.

how about Waino for Profar ?

      • Kevin S. - Nov 21, 2013 at 1:19 PM

How much salary are the Cardinals eating? Wainwright is properly compensated, Profar will be wildly undercompensated. Wainwright is more likely to decline over the course of his contract, Profar is going to improve. In a vacuum, Wainwright is the better player, but Profar will provide much greater value over the course of his contract.

A line up with Fielder, Beltran and McCann sounds scary in a good way

    • jvandever007 - Nov 21, 2013 at 9:47 AM

      Sounds expensive too

      • chill1184 - Nov 21, 2013 at 9:49 AM

Well yea there is that notion of cost but that would answer the question if the Rangers are just willing to put all their chips on table at this point.

        sounds like a pipe dream.
