The Mariners are looking at a couple big name closers

Nov 22, 2013, 2:06 PM EDT

The M’s are shopping:

A veteran free agent closer is the sort of luxury a 71-win team usually isn’t well advised to splurge on, but the Mariners have always been a little different than the other teams.

Why not just give the closer job to Danny Farquhar, let him rack up some saves to give him that Proven Closer sheen, and then flip him at the deadline? Or does that make too much sense?

Count me as a lifetime M’s fan who couldn’t agree with you more, Craig. Buying a “proven” closer make zero sense to me right now.

Maybe my understanding is incorrect, but isn’t spending money on a closer kind of a waste when you’re trailing from the third inning on anyway?

Hm. Nope. Not April 1 yet. Still, dad to read this twice to make sure that it wasn’t culled from The Onion.

Of course, the depths of incompetence in the Mariner front office is nearly impossible to measure, even with sonar. Why couldn’t I have been born in a decent baseball city? Seriously. It’s like Dumb and Dumber meets Groundhog Day.

When will teams learn that paying FA type money to closers is a waste of time. Oh wait…the good teams have already learned that.

    The mariners suck.

Maybe if they got into more save situations they would actually need a closer.

    Welcome to Seattle Lloyd.

Of course, if Felix and Iwakuma were to pitch EVERY game and Wilson were to close, they might win 73 games next year…

They can have Papelbon if they want.

As an M’s fan I say do it! Get both, then when we win 70 games we can fire Jack Z!!!
