Blue Jays GM denies Jeff Samardzija trade rumors (sort of)

Offseason trade rumors have linked Jeff Samardzija to various teams and over the weekend Bruce Levine of ESPN Chicago reported that “Toronto is putting together a package of young players” in an attempt to get the right-hander from the Cubs.

However, when asked about the Samardzija rumors on MLB Network radio Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos said:

I won’t comment on specific rumors and things like that, but I will say that we’re definitely exploring starters with teams. But also, just like a lot of stuff that’s out there that is false, we have not made an offer to anybody with respect to a starter. So if there is something out there that we’ve actually made an offer to someone for a starter, that is not accurate. It doesn’t mean we’re not inquiring. Right now, there isn’t anything imminent.

It’s worth noting that Anthopoulos is notoriously tight-lipped about basically everything and a lot of the above quote could be semantics-based, but still. He’s certainly trying to put the vibe out there that the Blue Jays aren’t deep in talks with the Cubs about Samardzija.

Not a Cub fan, but the team is doing very well stocking the farm. They are going to be good for many years to come.
A big payday must be coming in due time.

As a Cubs fan, I really really wish this was true. They’ve got a couple offensive prospects, but not that many have true high upside potential.
Soler, Almora, Bryant all have potential to hit the crap out of the ball. And I think Vogelbach might be the best out of all of them. But they’ll be lucky if one of those first 3 ever see a pitch in the majors.
But they have no pitchers coming up. All the good ones are old and still at A Ball.
I’m a fan of the Epstein team, and I think they’re on the right path. But the Cardinals still have a better system than the Cubs, and they just graduated how many pitchers this year?

They have 6 prospects that are rated as 60’s by Baseball America and about 20 prospects that are 55s. Their farm system is top three with the twins and Astros. A couple of offensive prospects is an understatement in regards to the strength of their farm system.

I’m not surprised that trade rumors are being leaked after the Dempster fiasco and how quick the trades with Texas and Atlanta hit the news wire.

The reply from AA is what he always says. The only time he deviated was when that BS Bautista trade story came out. He had to spend too much time answering emails about that nonsense, that he spiked that rumor. When he makes a trade, nothing is leaked to the press in advance.

Furthermore, he is much more likely to make a trade with the White Sox than the Cubs.

Well, I have seen two threads about the Samardzija to Toronto rumors. Both times I was like wait, this CANNOT be true. Proudlycanadian says AA NEVER, and I mean NEVER leaks anything. His lips are sealed tighter than all of The Go-Go’s combined. Sure enough, when I looked at the comments, proudlycanadian had already reminded us of this fact both times. The 7,164th reminder if my calculations are correct. Talk about beating a dead horse.

Actually, it is 8,888 times and counting. Still, the sports US media continues to be populated by ignorant people.

Levine: The Blue Jays are putting together a package to get JS
AA: The rumors that we’ve made an offer are false

Umm, there was no rumor that an offer had been made. AA didn’t deny anything that was reported. He wasn’t trying to squash anything, either. Just alot of yadda yadda about nothing.
