Cubs acquire George Kottaras from Royals

Designated for assignment by the Royals last week, catcher George Kottaras has been traded to the Cubs for cash considerations.

Kottaras has posted some ugly batting averages over the years, including .180 in 46 games this past season, but he draws lots of walks with decent power and has topped a .700 OPS in four straight years. For a left-handed-hitting backup catcher that’s very solid production and he’ll likely play a couple times per week for Chicago behind starter Welington Castillo.

I could be mistaken, but wasn’t Kottaras Wakefield’s catcher in 2009?

Maybe the Cubs ARE trying to get Dickey.

Unless things have changed since he left Milwaukee, Kottaras is strictly a left-handed batter.

Ah, Theo is rebuilding his team for another 90 loss season and a mid-season sell off of any player who can command a couple of single A long shots. Groundhog Day.

Is this really worth writing about? Cubs need more than a back up catcher try about 85% new roster.

It’s a good deal for the Cub’s fans to see, but if he signed anywhere else, it’s not writing worthy. Cubs need a catcher.
