The D.C. Mayor laughed at the Nationals when they pitched a roof for their ballpark

This is great. Following up on yesterday’s news that, at some point, the Nationals proposed a roof to their ballpark to the D.C. government, the Washington Business Journal reports on the mayor’s response:

Ted Lerner, Nationals owner and Washington-area development mogul, pitched Mayor Vincent Gray on the idea and it didn’t go well. A source in the mayor’s office said Gray “started laughing.” A second source in the executive office said the stadium wasn’t designed for a roof, so it “would be cost prohibitive and butt ugly.”

Well, this is the same franchise which once put a butt-ugly roof on their ballpark years after its construction, so it’s not like it’s anything new. Butt ugly is just part of the organization’s DNA.

Glad there is one politician who can say no, at least this once.

“Butt ugly is just part of the organization’s DNA.”

    Damn, shots fired.

I half disagree. the Expos’ unis are glorious. the nats uni’s from pillar to post are hideous.

Well, the latest and greatest in roof designs is what they’re doing in Qatar for World Cup 2022. Now, every owner is going to want one of these babies.

    • ras1tafari - Nov 27, 2013 at 12:13 PM

Folks can’t seem to clam up about that roof. It would be hard to muff up that design in Washington. Maybe if they can box it up with another proposal they shave down the cost.

      • Francisco (FC) - Nov 27, 2013 at 12:54 PM

clam, muff, box, shave. I have the distinct feeling these words were not chosen carelessly when describing that Qatar stadium…

Where do they install the Warp Drive ?

The 2022 WC is going to be such a disaster, and it’ll all be FIFA’s fault. Here’s a great idea, let’s hold a month long tournament in the middle of summer at a place that routinely hits 130+ degrees! Also at a place that outlaws drinking, double fun!

      • raysfan1 - Nov 27, 2013 at 10:58 PM

Alcohol is not illegal in Qatar.

      • dcfan4life - Nov 28, 2013 at 9:31 AM

It gets to around 105 degrees, not 130. Also, the new stadiums are being designed with, guess what, air conditioning!!! And new stadiums that are enclosed have show to keep a nice field temperature for sporting events. The games were a hit in Africa, Qatar i bet will be a nice surprise as well.

Come on internet, I really need to see the butt ugly roof. Don’t let me down.

    • dan1111 - Nov 27, 2013 at 12:12 PM

I say it is hand-drawn by Lerner on a picture of the stadium. That is the real reason the mayor laughed.

Duck tape, coathanger wire, Saran Wrap and tinfoil. With budget overruns, four or five hundred bucks, max. Butts ain’t ugly to species who mate by presenting rearward, like politicians.

  6. flyinhighwithvick - Nov 27, 2013 at 12:37 PM

Marion Barry would have been all for it.

    • historiophiliac - Nov 27, 2013 at 12:47 PM

      I don’t get it.

      • scoutsaysweitersisabust - Nov 27, 2013 at 2:18 PM

Have you never heard of Marion Barry?

P.S. No, it’s not something out of a movie, he is very real and all of that did happen. And yes he has continued to get re-elected over and over again.

      • historiophiliac - Nov 27, 2013 at 2:23 PM

Of course I’ve heard of Marion Barry. He was a leader in the civil rights movement. What I don’t get is what he has to do with a roof for the field.

      • scoutsaysweitersisabust - Nov 27, 2013 at 2:36 PM

Well, as the article I can link to can attest, he was the single worst mayor in the history of mayors. That jack a ninny in Toronto has NOTHING on Marion. He single-handedly bankrupt the DC government. At various times during his political career he was charged with stalking, failing sobriety tests while driving, engaging in prostitution, drug possession and use, plagiarizing, he gave a very lucrative government contract to his then girlfriend, failure to pay local and federal taxes, there was a rumor that he purchased a kidney, he voted against recognition of gay marriage, he was shot, improper use of funds (financed his vacations with city monies), markedly increased violence in the city largely due to drug wars, and lord knows what else. His powers were stripped SEVERAL times until he was nothing more than a figure-head before his term expired.

So, basically the joke was that this is the exact sort of worthless spending project and poor decision that would have been right up his alley.

      • scoutsaysweitersisabust - Nov 27, 2013 at 2:39 PM

Oh yea, and almost immediately after being released from FEDERAL prison, he was re-elected by nearly 70% of the vote. Then he continued to run the government into the ground YET AGAIN.

“The conflict was ultimately settled when in 1997 the Clinton Administration and Senator Lauch Faircloth agreed on legislation that rescued the city from its financial crisis but stripped Barry of all authority (including hiring and firing) over nine District agencies, making them directly answerable to the Control Board. Barry was left with control of only the Department of Parks and Recreation, the public libraries, and the Board of Tourism, as well as the ceremonial trappings of his office — a condition he characterized “a rape of democracy.”

      • historiophiliac - Nov 27, 2013 at 2:42 PM

I think I’ll just not comment on that.

    • scoutsaysweitersisabust - Nov 27, 2013 at 2:16 PM

Marion Barry wouldn’t have been able to afford it. He was too busy embezzling cash and snorting coke off of hookers asses. (Then getting re-elected 10 times over.)

  7. skids003 - Nov 27, 2013 at 12:58 PM

Everything about DC is a joke.

    • alang3131982 - Nov 27, 2013 at 1:08 PM

That’s one of the more ignorant comments ever made on these boards…..

i think you meant to say “everything about our federal government is a joke.” Or have you visited every neighborhood, school, museum, park, theater, restaurant and strip club in DC?

      • skids003 - Nov 27, 2013 at 2:01 PM

Since my comment is so ignorant, and you evidently so smart, try to figure it out for yourself.

      • alang3131982 - Nov 27, 2013 at 3:36 PM

what? I didnt say i didnt understand your comment. I wrote that your comment was idiotic and likely incorrect.

  8. scoutsaysweitersisabust - Nov 27, 2013 at 2:14 PM

Was this the same politician that helped approve a 600+ million dollar PUBLICLY funded stadium in the first place?

    • NatsLady - Nov 27, 2013 at 4:54 PM

    • asimonetti88 - Nov 27, 2013 at 5:19 PM

I believe Anthony Williams was the mayor involved with the funding and building and such of Nationals Park.

  9. crackersnap - Nov 27, 2013 at 2:22 PM

Andre Dawson, Andres Gallaraga, Warren Cromartie, John Wetteland, Marquis Grissom, Rusty Staub, Larry Walker, Tim Wallach, Steve Rogers, Vlad Guerrero, Tim Raines, Gary Carter…

I wish MY favorite team had that level of butt ugly in its DNA.

    • yahmule - Nov 27, 2013 at 7:55 PM

      Randy Johnson.

  10. jm91rs - Nov 27, 2013 at 3:05 PM

You’d have to be a mayor on crack to not laugh at that proposal…amirite Toronto? Sorry.

  11. brianjoates - Nov 28, 2013 at 9:00 AM

Learners should just ask ol mayor grays staff for the money, this guy is just as corrupt as the rest.

  12. pa9erfan - Nov 28, 2013 at 11:06 AM
