Brian Wilson nearing a return to the Dodgers

Dec 3, 2013, 12:02 PM EDT

Dodgers' Wilson watches the game against the Diamondbacks in the seventh inning during their MLB National League baseball game in Phoenix Reuters

As of last week Brian Wilson was said to be in “serious” talks with Detroit, but now that the Tigers are on the verge of signing Joe Nathan as their new closer Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports reports that Wilson is nearing a return to the Dodgers.

Wilson was fantastic down the stretch as a setup man for the Dodgers, throwing 20 innings with a 0.45 ERA and 21/6 K/BB ratio combined in the regular season and playoffs. And after missing nearly all of 2012 following Tommy John elbow surgery he averaged 93.2 miles per hour with his fastball.

Prior to the surgery Wilson put together a four-year run as the Giants’ closer in which he saved 163 games with a 3.00 ERA and 10.1 strikeouts per nine innings.

YES!! Love that guy. Perfect set up man. I’d always get my beers ready for the 8th inning.

Agreed, he’s a West Coast guy. His idiosyncrasies have “sunsetsider” spraypainted all over them in dayglo. He would not have fit in in the upper midwest unless he planned to spend all his free time hanging out in Ann “Two Square Miles Surrounded by Reality” Arbor. The problem would have been, of course, that he’d have to cross several miles of reality to get to and from the stadium. That could have been rough on him. It’s not an issue he’ll have to face at Chavez Ravine. And he’ll also be just a few exits away from Hyperion, with its promise of a quick stop at Burrito King. Some things you just can’t compensate for with money alone.

And Jansen does what now? Back to the eighth?

But that is kinda the point of the name…a team does not need a marquee player, especially at marquee player salary, to hold down the eighth inning. If the Dodgers were fine with Jansen closing, it would not make much sense to sign Nathan. Maybe they are scared by KJ’s heart issues.

The great bullpens out there, the ones whose teams generally play deep in October, have deep bullpens. Not just a lights out closer with warm bodies in the other spots, but several relievers who excel at their jobs. Wilson in the 8th and Jansen in the 9th, or vice versa, is pretty dam solid.

Has the multi-tattooed Brandon League gone AWOL?

      One can only hope.
