This ultra-active day on the hot stove continues.

According to beat writer Troy Renck of the Denver Post, the Rockies are “closing in on” a two-year contract with free agent first baseman Justin Morneau. No word yet on the financial terms.

Morneau struggled mightily throughout the 2013 season, batting .259 with a .741 OPS in 127 games with the Twins and then .260 with a .681 OPS in 25 games with the Pirates after a late-summer trade. The Rockies will hope that the 32-year-old can return to his old offensive form and serve as a productive replacement for Todd Helton, who retired at the end of the regular season. Michael Cuddyer will presumably stay in right field, where he played 113 games in 2013.

*************************

UPDATE, 10:53 p.m. ET: The two sides have officially agreed to terms, according to CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman. Morneau’s two-year contract with the Rockies will be worth about $13 million total.

Another reason why I don’t get into “rooting for the Pirates” because they are underdogs or have sucked for so long. Pennsylvania sports fans are insufferable douches. Steeler fans, Pens fans, Eagles, Phillies, Flyers, Penn State.

The Pirates can go on another 20 year streak of not making the playoffs and that be fine by me.

You tell him Rob Ford. Nobody messes with Moruneau, if they know whats good for them.

Ah, don’t blame all Pennsylvania fans. He’s a football fan. They are idiots by definition.

I don’t think he will ever get back to his MVP form, but if he is going to return to being a 20-30 HR guy, Coors Field is the perfect place to do it. If he starts swinging the bat well again, the Rockies will have a heck of a powerful offense with Tulo, CarGo, and Cuddyer.

He will have a solid year don’t worry

Morneau always seemed like a good guy. I hope he does well in Colorado.

      good guys an understatement

eh, he’s cheap and somebody has to stand between 2B and the foul line. If he’s 3 WAR for the contract, then its equal value and that shouldnt be too hard, as long as he stays on the field.

    • gdobs227 - Dec 4, 2013 at 1:02 AM

Good luck with that. He’s been a 0.4 WAR over the last three years.

Your forgetting Rosario as part of their big offense ^

The love for Justin and MC Cuddyer lives on in Minnesota. Good luck rockies.

I think he will earn that and more. Okay I admit I’m a Twins fan. But when healthy he’s an MVP candidate. And there’s a real chance he’ll be healthy.
