There was a report Sunday stating that the Cubs’ preference with Jeff Samardzija is to work out a long-term contract extension. But it appears that those negotiations have lost all momentum.

ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick is hearing that the Chicago front office plans to “do some serious listening” on the 28-year-old right-hander at next week’s Winter Meetings in Orlando, Florida. The Diamondbacks, Blue Jays and Angels are among the teams that have been floated as potential suitors this offseason.

Samardzija posted a pedestrian 4.34 ERA and 1.35 WHIP in 33 starts this summer for the Cubs, but he struck out 214 batters in 213 2/3 innings and had much better rate stats (3.81 ERA, 1.22 WHIP) in 2012.

Samardzija is arbitration-eligible through the 2015 season. He earned a $2.64 million salary in 2013.

Oh I’m sure teams will be lining up to trade for this shaggy bag of ass. He was putrid last year.

His peripherals weren’t that far off from 2012.

      2012: 9.27 K/9, 2.89 BB/9, 1.03 HR/9, .296 BABIP, 12.8% HR/FB rate, 3.55 FIP, 3.38 XFIP.

      2013: 9.01 K/9, 3.29 BB/9, 1.05 HR/9, .314 BABIP, 13.3% HR/FB rate, 3.77 FIP, 3.45 XFIP.

He also pitched 28 more innings and had a 5.58 ERA in September. Maybe he got a little worn down? I think Samardzija would be a real nice pickup for someone.

Maybe in a better pitcher’s park.

        Yeah, Angels maybe?

        Better than Wrigley? That`s sarcasm….right?

      • voidhelix - Dec 4, 2013 at 9:45 PM

I said that because traditionally the home of the Cubbies is a pitcher`s paradise. Then I checked 2013`s PF. 11th in HR, 2nd in runs? Maybe you`re right.

    Indians could really use him…

Don’t be fooled by the less-than-stellar offenses that the Cubs been trotting out recently (and not so recently…).Wrigley really only favors pitching when the wind blows in off the lake. When it blows out you’ll see homeruns in bunches.

Shopping to who? Are teams lining up outside Ballroom A for the 4th starter conference?
