According to Joe Frisaro of MLB.com, the Marlins have had “internal discussions” about a trade for Rays utility man Sean Rodriguez. The plan would be to play him at third base, possibly as part of a platoon.

The Marlins are reportedly close to a two-year, $7.5 million contract with Garrett Jones, which likely signals that Logan Morrison will be traded. The Rays are one of many teams who have expressed interest, so Frisaro speculates that a swap of Morrison for Rodriguez and a pitcher could get it done.

Rodriguez posted a mediocre .246/.320/.385 batting line to go along with five home runs and 23 RBI over 222 plate appearances this past season, but he has proven useful against southpaws during his career and provides versatility. He’ll turn 29 in April and is slated to hit free agency after the 2015 season. The Marlins have top prospect Colin Moran on the way, so Rodriguez would mostly be a stopgap option.

Great move for all parties involved. S-Rod gets to play in front of friends and family every night and the Rays can free up a bench spot for a more consistent bat and glove. This is a win-win-win. Hope it happens.

That’s good that S-Rod’s friends and family will be there every night. They can hang out with El Keed’s friends and family. No one else is going to show up, so they should have the whole section to themselves.

I can remember looking at Detroit’s SBnation blog after the Fister deal went down. A Nats fan was there trolling, without knowing he was trolling. He kept saying things like “Lombardozzi played just as hard as Bryce Harper”, and “Lombardozzi’s dad was a great player from Maryland, so I’m really going to miss him”. The Tigers fans reacted as once might expect, telling this guy what he could do to himself, because a top 20 SP was traded for a utility player with -.4 career WAR and 2 minor league relievers.

I kind of think Friedman is using this reasoning to sell SeanRod for LoMo to Loria. “He plays just as hard as Longoria”, and “His Dad used to coach for the Hurricanes”.

another player with extremely meager numbers. He should fit In perfectly.

The Marlins need to make a real move–Trade Stanton to the Dodgers for Eithier and Crawford and a good pitching prospect–The Dodgers pay all but 10 million of those salaries—3 players for about 3.3 million each and good players also–good deal for both teams
