Rosenthal: Chances of a Mark Trumbo trade “increasing”

Dec 9, 2013, 6:43 PM EDT

Angels general manager Jerry Dipoto has routinely downplayed a potential trade of Mark Trumbo so far this offseason, but things are heating up at the Winter Meetings in Orlando.

The Diamondbacks are in the market for a power bat this winter and made a strong run at Carlos Beltran before he agreed to a deal with the Yankees. Trumbo would obviously fit the bill, but the price tag would be substantial. Arizona does have starting pitching to deal, which is one obvious area of need for the Angels. Top prospect Archie Bradley isn’t going anywhere, but Bob Nightengale of USA Today speculated over the weekend that Tyler Skaggs, Trevor Cahill, Brandon McCarthy and Wade Miley could be on the table.

Trumbo, who turns 28 in January, has amassed 95 home runs over the past three seasons. Only Jay Bruce, Jose Bautista, Adrian Beltre, and Miguel Cabrera have more during the same timespan. His power has value, but he owns a .299 on-base percentage through 460 games in the majors.

UPDATE: CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman reports that 12 teams are in the mix for Trumbo, with ESPN’s Jayson Stark naming the Royals as another potential fit. Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times hears that the Angels are not interested in Skaggs for Trumbo, at least one-for-one-.

I admit, it is far-fetched, but a Mark Trumbo for Cliff Lee, Dominic Brown and [insert high-end pitching prospect here] seems to make some sense for all involved.

Which, even if presented the opportunity, is why Ruben Amaro will not do it.

The Rangers should just trade Darvish, Fielder, Profar, and Perez for Trumbo. Makes about the same sense as your trade. Or the Pirates can trade Cole, Cutch, and the rest of the farm system for him. 400 player deal!

How does that make any sense?
It would be more like Mark Trumbo + one of the Angels top prospects for Lee and Brown.

Yeah, pretty far-fetched. Did you check that OBP for Trumbo?

As an Angels fan, I think this is a great trade idea.

Wtf? Maybe they could trade him for Lester, Xander Boegarts and a high prospect.

    • bfunk1978 - Dec 9, 2013 at 7:23 PM

Whatever. I’ll give them Trevor Rosenthal, Carlos Martinez, Michael Wacha, and Oscar Taveras. That should be fair.

      • detectivejimmymcnulty - Dec 9, 2013 at 7:50 PM

Not even close. Include Wainwright or no deal.

      • bfunk1978 - Dec 10, 2013 at 8:30 AM

        well OK you got me.

The Angels should just trade every young player they have and continue to sign older players to monster deals. It’s been working really well lately. :face palm:

Jerry, the life of a GM comes down to just a few moments. This is one of them. DO. NOT. BLOW. IT.

He knows the DBags. They have tons of young pitching. Skaggs and McCarthy would work. You’d be stealing them.

    • nsauser - Dec 9, 2013 at 7:30 PM

The Angels should know Skaggs well since they drafted him and then got robbed in the Dan Haren trade. Wait, wasn’t DiPoto the interim GM for the Dbacks at the time?

Typical Dbacks, trigger happy with no where to go.

      • asimonetti88 - Dec 10, 2013 at 12:16 AM

For the most part, Haren was solid for the Halos. His 2011 season was very good.

Lol Yankees will go out and try to get him.

  6. miken13 - Dec 10, 2013 at 10:11 AM

I do believe you have this article wrong. Edwin Encarnacion has also hit 95 home runs over the last 3 years as well.

I would trade Hendrick before Trumbo–I don’t think Diporto is good enough to get anything for Trumbo–Morales for Vargas? The Angels lost on that one also–Blanton?–Trade Howie -At least we have someone to replace him–Then fire Diporto
