Diamondbacks looking at either Mark Trumbo or Shin-Soo Choo

The Diamondbacks seem determined to get a bat, and it’s apparently going to be either Mark Trumbo or Shin-Soo Choo. It sounds like, for their own good, it had better be Choo.

Jon Heyman reports that they are currently considering trading Trevor Cahill and Tyler Skaggs to the Angels for Trumbo. Which, really, seems like an overpay for power. Skaggs’ numbers in Triple-A and the bigs aren’t fantastic, but he’s just 22 and is one of the better pitching prospects in the game. Cahill is the capable sort of veteran starter that the Angels desperately need in the middle of the rotation.

As for Choo, the Dbacks would certainly have to pay a lot of money. Some have speculated that he’s going to get Carl Crawford money — something like $140 million — which is what happens when the outfielder market is so thin on talent. Choo, of course, is a nice piece at the top of a lineup given his on-base ability, and he has some pop as well. Open question if the Dbacks would think of him as a leadoff guy the way the Reds did, however.

Either Skaggs or Cahill straight up for Trumbo would have me laughing at AZ. But there’s going to be more to it, I think.

Where will Trumbo play for the D-Backs? Aren’t he and Goldschmidt both first baseman? No DH – could 1 of them move/change positions?

Alright, I’ll tell the bad joke… if the D-Backs can’t figure out if they’re looking at either Mark Trumbo or Shin-Soo Choo… they need better glasses.

Keith Law: Hearing Skaggs-Trumbo discussion now includes White Sox possibly getting Adam Eaton, sending Hector Santiago to Angels

Sweet Baby Jesus! Do it, Jerry. Just agree to it and run out of the room. Tell Arte about it later. He’ll want to add Adam Dunn or something. This is your moment, Jerry! Just say yes!

I thought the Ellsbury contract was an overpay, but it won’t look nearly as bad as Choo getting 140 million.

It’s entirely possible that by year 2 or 3 he becomes even worse against lefties and becomes the highest paid platoon player in baseball.

140 for Choo? NO way–half that–I almost think I would pass this year–too many bad conracts–Im a Dodger so I would go after Kershaw-and Hanley-Then try to trade for some more offense then just quit–too much money throwing around for nothing–Cano 240-Santana 100 McCann 85 Tanaka 125–Cruz 75-Price the farm and another 30 million plus?–Id just pass even as a Dodger and wait and see later
