Eight teams have expressed interest in Johan Santana

He’s coming off his second shoulder surgery and just this week we learned, in the form of Roy Halladay‘s retirement, just how devastating shoulder surgeries can be. But that’s not stopping as many as eight teams expressing interest in Johan Santana, reports Andrew Marchand of ESPN New York.

The Mets, Yankees, Twins, Rays, Orioles, Royals, Brewers and Pirates are teams which, at some point recently, have been tied to Santana to greater or lesser degrees. Probably lesser, in terms of both interest and money, as he is nothing approaching a sure thing to be a useful pitcher anymore. But on a one-year deal with more incentives than guaranteed dollars? Sure, why not? What’s to lose?

MLB is getting like the NBA. Too many teams where average and/or over-the-hill guys are the only option left. Recycling of the same dudes.

We have expansion to thank for that.

if 8 teams are interested in Santana …. why would ” one-year deal with more incentives than guaranteed dollars? Sure, why not? What’s to lose?” get him signed?

He will be 35 on opening day, and has thrown 117 innings the past 3 years. He makes Delmon Young look like a catch

What do potential suitors have to lose? The precise amount of guaranteed money they sign him to. And lose they will

wouldn’t mind seeing the Pirates do this for a one year deal. Heck, they gave Liriano a 2 year deal, he broke his arm in the offseason last year, and had a helluva comeback. Why not?

Let’s go Braves, if Jason Hammel is the other option…. Make it 9 teams

    Team 1: Is he awake?
Team 2: Is he even alive?
Team 3: Is that his arm over there?
Team 4: No, his arm is attached. Wait, is that duct tape?
Team 5: Is it lunch time?
Team 6: What do you think Johan might eat, you know, if he were still alive?
Team 7: A giant pastrami sammich?
Team 8: No, that requires two hands.

Andrew Marchand, taking notes on the conversation from behind the fake planter, pounds out a tweet: 8 teams interested in Johan Santana.

    Blogs react accordingly.

As long as he is not looking for a huge payday, I agree, give it a try. If he really wants to compete he will take a lower $ incentive laden deal. Maybe even a Minor League deal with a performance trigger that if he hits it he is moved to MLB or released to look elsewhere.
