Quote of the Day: Joe Girardi, romantic poet

Dec 13, 2013, 11:19 AM EDT

Aw, shucks:

Hey girl, you are a flower in our clubhouse.

Gotta believe at some point this year he’ll be singing a different tune. Something like “Please don’t go, Mr. Cano. I miss you so, I miss you so, I miss you so”

    • yournuts - Dec 13, 2013 at 1:24 PM

As a Yankee fan I will miss Cano but by no means is Cano superstar material. Don’t forget that with the Yankees he had a ton of protection in the lineup and a very short right field fence.
We have waited for him to mature but he is in his own world. He is an excellent player but he is not a leader, he has fantastic ability but it is not as evident as Dustin Pedroia ability to win games and be a leader. He was never close to being a MVP of the league. Good luck in Seattle Robbie, we Yankee fans wish you well.

Roses are red. Violets are blue. No more Robby…Jacob it is you.
      Joe Girardi

This is how you know a man has daughters. Stuff like that slips out in normal conversation without you realizing it.

Come on, we all know girls exclusively speak in poetry and read only the great Men poets. Look at all the daughters of Lord Byron. Clearly, if Joe had masculine children his quote about Jacoby would have been a long string of expletives followed by a meal of hard liquor and steak.

      • historiophiliac - Dec 13, 2013 at 12:17 PM

I’m trying to follow the logic. Little girls make men turn into poets? You have poetic-man sacs that release at the birth of a girl but not boys? Does this mean non-poetic men have daughters who are failures at little girling? I mean, do I hate my dad for not doing so, or am I supposed to turn that inwards and blame myself because he does not wax poetic? Is that why I don’t like my thighs? So much to keep track of.

As a father of a 5-year-old (who routinely ropes me into playing tea party and animal doctor with stuffed animals – my daughter is the girlies of the girly), I can tell you that you’ll think up stuff to say at a proper social gathering of the high rollers and things will just come out of my mouth. I get exactly what ctony1216 is saying because I’ve been there. Recently.

      • historiophiliac - Dec 13, 2013 at 12:38 PM

So, poetry is girlie? Do you have a son? He doesn’t inspire you to say flowery things?

      • bfunk1978 - Dec 13, 2013 at 12:39 PM

I only have the one kid, sorry. No idea if he’d be a frilly fancy pants. 😉

      • bfunk1978 - Dec 13, 2013 at 12:40 PM

Not saying it’s girly, btw, just saying I have a daughter that causes that kind of…flowery language to slip out once in a while. At work. Talking to my boss. He finds it amusing. I hope.

    Haha this is funny.

They could use some more flowers among their pitching staff…and about three quarters of their infield.

  5. indaburg - Dec 13, 2013 at 1:09 PM

To me, it sounds like Mrs. Girardi is a lucky lady. /sigh

    • historiophiliac - Dec 13, 2013 at 1:12 PM

      Well, hellooooo.

      • indaburg - Dec 13, 2013 at 3:10 PM

        Hey there.

      • historiophiliac - Dec 13, 2013 at 3:11 PM

        Oh, nice puppy. Been busy?

      • indaburg - Dec 13, 2013 at 4:36 PM

        That’s my big girl. :-) She’s a sweetie.

Nah, not really. I needed a break from baseball and yelling at strangers on the internet.

      • historiophiliac - Dec 13, 2013 at 4:40 PM

        She’s a cutie.

Me too. I’m giving up the Tigers, btw. I may be skulking around here a lot less this coming season.

      • indaburg - Dec 13, 2013 at 4:45 PM

        HUH? Why??

      • indaburg - Dec 13, 2013 at 4:47 PM

I mean, your new manager is H.O.T. and smart. Mr. Calcaterra himself has the vapors over him. I was thinking of giving the Tigers a gander myself.

      • historiophiliac - Dec 13, 2013 at 4:53 PM

        It’s the math.

Ausome manager + Joba – Prince + pay raise to Don Kelly + more Phil Choke – Dog Fister = Angry Laura

        Boycott 2014!

      • indaburg - Dec 13, 2013 at 5:04 PM

        Miggy + Verlander + Scherzer + Anibal + Iglesias + V-Mart + Ian Kinsler + rejuvenated Torii + versatile/speedy Rajai (he is fun to watch) + Ausome manager(HOT^2 + SMART^3) = You’ll be back.

They’re going to be my #2 team next year. I’m shallow.

You guys just need a closer and watch out.

The Joba signing. I really think the Yankees mismanaged him.

      • historiophiliac - Dec 13, 2013 at 5:08 PM

We got a closer — Nathan. I don’t like Kinsler and I HATE Joba. I hope they lose and I’m going to heckle them like Statler & Waldorf.

Why doesn’t anyone believe me that I’m getting a new team?

I can picture similar remarks from Billy Martin during the Reggie Jackson introductory press conference circa the winter of 1976. Not.
