Rockies acquire Drew Stubbs from Indians for Josh Outman

It sounds like the Rockies are committed to playing Carlos Gonzales is center field after trading away Dexter Fowler, but they’ve picked up an alternative just in case.

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that the Rockies have acquired Drew Stubbs from the Indians in exchange for left-hander Josh Outman.

Stubbs is probably best suited for a part-time role at this point, as he never really developed after showing promise with the Reds early on. This year he hit just .223 with 10 homers and a .665 OPS in 146 games for Cleveland and he hasn’t cracked a .700 OPS since 2010, but Stubbs is a very good base-stealer and defensive center fielder with some power.

Coloado deemed Outman expendable after signing Boone Logan to a three-year, $15 million deal (and trading for Franklin Morales today), but he pitched reasonably well with a 4.33 ERA and 53/23 K/BB ratio in 54 innings and should slot into a middle relief role in Cleveland. He held left-handed hitters to a .198 batting average and just one homer this year.

Good move by the Rockies. Stubbs can still “go get the ball”, and in Coors that is vital. This allows the Rockies to insert Stubbs, late in games and against tough lefties, allowing Gonzales’ work load to lessen.

Umm… Cargo hit .310/.340/.535 against lefties last year. I don’t think he’s going to sit.

I didn’t mean to imply, that Stubbs would take significant playing time away from Gonzales, but everybody needs some time off, and having Stubbs, allows Gonzales to slide over to left in late innings, or take a breather with a sizable lead.

Has there ever been a surname more ill-suited to appear on a Major League roster than “Outman”?

    The anti-superhero.

“Outman” seems like a good name for a pitcher … certainly much better than “Balfour”

Are you kidding??? “Outman” is very possibly the most awesome name ever for a pitcher.

Looks like Stubbs for Choo was a bargin last year.

That Stubbs for Choo trade you refer to also had the Indians getting top pitching prospect Trever Bauer in return, whom they have in their control until after the 2019 season. Stubbs was the throw in part of that trade. It is also obvious that the Indians would not have been able to resign Choo this off season, and you can see that the Reds certainly did not prosper having rented Choo for 1 year. I’d say the Indians played that hand very well.

And it cost the Reds a short stop prospect I think we all hoped would quickly take Zack Cozart’s job.

great move for the rockies if they are looking for a guy to strike out all the time.I blamed dusty for his downfall for insisting he leadoff because he was fast. but he did not get any better in cleveland. he is overrated as a defensive guy because he is fast. just because he is fast enough to make up for getting a bad jump on the ball does not make good.

Well, it was also a good move for the Indians. They now have 2 lefties in the bullpen with Outman and Scrabble. Stubbs wasn’t going to be a part of the Indians this season, so it works well for both teams.
