UPDATE: The Padres have a deal with Joaquin Benoit

Dec 18, 2013, 10:37 AM EDT

UPDATE: Jeff Passan says a deal is done, pending a physical. No word on the cash, but figure between $7-9 million a year for two years.

8:48 AM: The Padres have a closer in Huston Street who saved 33 games last year and who will make $7 million this year. But who says you only have to have one closer?

Or, for that matter, who says Benoit is hell-bent on remaining a closer? It’s not like he’s had the job forever. He’s used to setup work. Also: if you’re the Padres, this could work out as a flip-a-closer-at-the-deadline situation.

At last report, Benoit was seeking roughly Huston Street money.

Before signing this expensive guy, why not call the A’s and see if they would trade Luke Gregerson for Seth Smtih?

Oh wait, no one would be dumb enough to make that trade…….

That’s a lot of money to tie up in two relievers. One wonders if they aren’t looking to make a deal with one.

At least the Padres have spent a little money. It feels like a make or break year for Josh Byrnes as he shed the shadow of Jed Hoyer and the team he is putting out in 2014 is pretty much all his from his trades and signings. Padres payroll will probably be around 85M which is a lot for them.

Maybe it’s some kind of all-out playoff push to take advantage of Chase Headley’s last year with the club…?

This seems like a “final piece of the puzzle” move you make when you’re a strong contender. I wanna believe but are the Padres at that point?

Step three: Convince Chase Headley not to stink this year. Just kidding. I know that thumb injury screwed last season for him.

Can’t help but think there’s more moves to come but Benoit surely much better against lefties than Gregerson, who was starting to lose a bit. Solves need to get a lefty reliever but also fills 8 or 9th innings.

Not sure how to e-mail this to Craig but I think he’d like to read this in the A-Rod case:

Upper right hand corner there’s a box called “feedback” where you can send it.
